They loved it. Sometimes they hated the cappelmeister, but hey. They were very good... Clear, resonant sopranos. Sometimes they younger one can be gently coerced into letting loose with some high church...

Did you ever try to put one of them on drums "so they could help you out?" Or maybe guitar, strumming cords while you played bass? Family time sharing music.

We did when they were little. The elder had a gift for guitar, and the younger was a pretty good drummer when she was six!
Now the younger does have an electric guitar and we did a Christmas CD last year. But it's a rare event. She's always studying now, in college. I'm horrified...

I often turn the TV volume down and listen to some games on the radio. I really like the old mystery drama's that stations use to play. Even as kid I would find a station and listen in bed at night. Actually had to use your brain and imagination. Cool stuff.

My 19 y/o on my 2013 Gibson TBIV.
My 15 y/o on drums.

This was yesterday for a Memorial Benefit for a recently departed member of the local music community, Dale Sholler, MHRIP.

My boys sat in for the whole set with a popular local band, Cybil and the Beast. They are also dear friends of my wife and I and they sure do love my boys which makes all of this such a special thing for this proud dad.

Very cool!

OK, just kidding, just kidding. I like most Big Band, but some of the pure Jazz then (and now) is less satisfying than hearing the toilet flush.

My parents were generally tolerant. Black Sabboth though, put Dad over the edge every time. I could play Beatles, CSNY, Yes, Kinks, and the like in the living room. Sabboth was strictly a bedroom band. With headphones when Dad was home.

Hah! I was playing "This is the End" on the Doors 1st LP when my dad walked into the "rec-room" and he gave me a worried look... "father.., I want to kill you ... mother... I want to.....arrrggghhh" ... "you see dad, it's the Oedipus thing.., you know, Greek classics..."

Did another little test that borders on pointless. Recorded all four of my bird related basses into Logic, similar groove and attack, but it has some serious handicaps...
Bass 1 is the Cataldo NR41 with brand new DR Pure Blues strings. I don’t love these strings.
Bass 2 is the Fano JM4 with Cobalt Flats
Bass 3 is the Greco ‘Bird with a set of Rotos that have seen better days
Bass 4 is the ‘02 Gibson with Fender Roundwounds. Did two long shows (one outdoors) on the strings, so they’re not dead, but not what they were new

Right now my Greco has SITs on it, I like them but I think the Ken Smith are a little better on that specific bass. I'm going to try the SITs on my White '89....

I've love to hear a comparison of the Power Steels and Rock Masters when you've had them on the same bass. Or have you already?

I used to love Mystery Theater on the radio. It was an oasis of sorts on cross country road trips in my youth. Regardless of what state you were driving thru, you could usually find a station playing an episode in the evenings.

SIT Power Steels and and Dunlop stainless Marcus Miller Super Brights sound really good on the Limited Edition Epi Fours. IMO.

That settles it! Power Steels will go on the red Limited Edition.

I like them all. Really hard for me to order them, though. I know strings make a huge difference, but as-is, I like the Gibson and the Greco, then the Cataldo, then the Fano.

A lot of people think OTC NSAIDs and other common pain relievers are completely safe with no side effects because you can buy them off the shelf at the grocery/drug store. That's why it's important if taking something all the time your doctor knows it and monitors the effects with regular lab work.

And read the fine print! (Just like with adjusting a THUNDERBIRD three point.)

I visited their Vaudreuil store yesterday, that's where I tried the ebony VP and the Gibson VS. Almost walked out with the VS. Prolly would not have been so strong if that Gibby woulda been ebony. There's one in Orleans Who knows...

As for the NRs... I'd have to try one. I'll be frank (I'll let others decide if they want to be surelys...), I'm more attracted towards the reverse models. I find that shape and vibe just... irresistible. And we haven't even touched tone...




Yeah. I'm still not over selling the 2008 Gibby last year.

I have only seen 3 or 4 NRs that excited me- all owned by TC members. But the Rs? Divine.

While I've been playing my NR for 48 years, offandon, I played-sitting-a R(VP?) for the first time just b4 the C-19 lockdown. Felt quite familiar. Was at a GC, wasn't plugged in to anything. Just wanted to see how it felt compared to my 67 NR.

A little hyperbolic at best... we all gravitate to a type/style/genre of music (or a broad spectrum of music) and exclude other 'flavors' for any number of reasons. Those artists mentioned were of great notoriety/appreciation in their generation, like anyone is or was since. Personally I can't slag that.

Regardless of who is named, the term applies. It’s one thing to revere the greats, another to dismiss everyone else (or entire genres) out of hand.

Dad & Mom liked big band, musical soundtracks, old c&w, classical, folk, and more. They didn’t care much for hard rock, but They liked some pop and tolerated more. Dad played piano (mainly classical and hymns, but occasionally Sousa or ragtime). Mom had sung with a USAF band. They supported my trombone and guitar habits. One if my sisters is really gifted; she’s a good pianist and incredible organist. Sings and directs choirs as well.
My wife loves to sing. Our son tried guitar for a while but gave up when he couldn’t advance quickly. Both our kids sportsed, which we also supported.
I’m the only Birder (or known bassist) in the family.

You never know how kids will react to their parents interests. Not having kids of my own, I've seen friends families go every direction possible. Which is a good thing really...

I recently sold my SWR 400s/Golieth II that I bought new in the (pre Fender acquisition) '90s. Just didn't need it these days but it was/is a great amp - bulletproof and articulate. (tube pre-amp) Great for bi-amping also.

I was taking the photo. I was about 8 years old at the time and I had never used a camera before, hence the blurry pic. But it’s the only one I have of my dad with his upright. Look carefully and you’ll see one of my sisters in the go-go boots hamming it up with a Masonic sword, another one that had just turned 18 with a bottle of liquor and the one one the left doing glamor poses. My dad was wearing the eye patch because he just had glaucoma surgery and his selection of fine silk attire was driven by a Swing gig he was doing that night at a Japanese business convention.

Thanks for explaining that and definitely a great pic! When I saw your dad all I could think was Samurai Pirate! I wish we had done some pics like that but everything in our photo albums are pretty normal. Still nice to look back on but nothing as cool as this pool side pic.

Thanks. One of the things in life that bothers me most is my dad passing away before I got my life in order, married my second wife (he hated the first one, so did I) and took up bass playing. Time is short, those of you that still have parents, make the most of it.

I'm lucky enough to still have both of mine but I'm very well aware of the hands of time and it saddens me. I'll finally see them in mid-August, 4 months shy of 2 years without seeing them. Friggin' Covid!
