I was in a service once where an old Negro Spiritual was sung. The song, which I can't recall, is powerful and full of emotion, in a good way. The lady sang it in a professional almost operatic style. She hit every note with perfection. But it sucked like a shop vac. I was thinking, how do you ruin this song, but they figured out how to do it. I realize it's a preference thing, but that was almost a travesty to suck the life out of it like that.

Lexington had a team called the Thoroughblades. My friend sent me a puck years ago. Still have it somewhere around here.

This is what happens when you’re self taught. You develop a style that feels right for you, never really thinking about how it might limit your progress down the road. To this day I just can’t get the hang of pick playing, and there are many songs that just don’t sound right without it (Another One Bites the Dust comes to mind). I’m sure if I had started with traditional bass lessons I’d be much much further along than I am today. On the plus side, there are very few songs that I want to play that I can’t play or couldn’t learn to play. So I choose to live with my inherent handicaps.

Can I get a AMEN? I started playing Bossa Novas and standards as background music for Officer's Club cocktail hours during my time as a Navy musician. I can trace most of my bad habits to that time, including one, or occasionally two, finger plucking.
