The big band I worked in along with my Dad Had a leader who didn't like vocals. If a gig required using a vocalist, he'd book an operatic tenor from the Palm Beach Symphony. Excellent voice; no 'feel'.I'd rather hear Geddy!
I was in a service once where an old Negro Spiritual was sung. The song, which I can't recall, is powerful and full of emotion, in a good way. The lady sang it in a professional almost operatic style. She hit every note with perfection. But it sucked like a shop vac. I was thinking, how do you ruin this song, but they figured out how to do it. I realize it's a preference thing, but that was almost a travesty to suck the life out of it like that.
