Thunderbird Club

I thought they were some kind of reworked PU with a more vintage tone target. But their site didn't say that. I thought I recall reading something like that when they were first announced.

I thought I read somewhere that they would be Alnico, then more recently, heard from Gibson that they would be ceramic. :bookworm:

A lot of my feelings about this re-issue come down to what I was hoping vs what was written about them vs the ultimate reality. Info from Gibson was pretty stark, but I’d hoped they would have the features I had assembled in my imaginary world. :D

I’ll be an owner in a couple weeks, hopefully, then I’ll know for sure.

I’ll be waiting, probably a long time, before swapping the pups, since Thunderbucker is temporarily out of action.

The neck? Well, we want what we want. My three Ps are fine. I know I could play that extra 1/8. Until it’s in my hands, I won’t know if I’ll like it. I hoped it would feel like my TBird in some way. My three Ps are all 1 and 5/8, but all feel different. So we shall see.

So, it’s basically a P Bass neck?

Man, I have a couple of those, and I like them, but really wanted something that felt like my TBird.

I love how these NRs look, but I can’t help feeling like 3 strikes. (Pickups, bridge /I like the 2pc or aftermarket/, neck profile).

Maybe I’m overthinking it, but these things are starting to weigh on me.

If I got to swap out the pups, and maybe the bridge, and still feel a PBass neck, I dunno. For the money, I can just pick up another reverse TBird.

Somebody talk me down :D
You haven't even heard the PUPs. You have no idea what the neck will feel like until you spend some time with one. A babicz chrome bridge will look great on it. If you don't like that idea , an ashtray over the bridge will make it look vintage. Take a deep breath, it will be fine.

My 67 NR is 1 1/2; my Ibanez is 1 5/8. No problem with the width. I'm not crazy 'bout the Ibby's profile/radius, but it's OK.

I’m holding my breath. You can’t make me breathe if I don’t want to. :roflmao:

Seriously, I’ll be OK. Still a lover of all things TBird-like.

I s'pose the only way to get one exactly as I'd want it would be a custom build. I can't afford a ready built so I think that would be outta the question.

Funny thing with the new NR Tbird. From a visual standpoint I like everything about it except two not so minor issues - the three point, wish they had gone the Eppi vp route, but that’s easily compensated for with a hard tail and bridge cover. The other and to me most glaring OCD thing is the decision to put the Gibson name on the headstock and not the truss cover. It just looks out of place there. I’d have to have Irv make me a custom truss with the Gibby name and find a way to cover/hide the Gibson logo on the headstock. I’m sure it’s just me, but it’s really driving me nutz and there’s no easy fix without painting over it.

It could be a pre-sale. Already delivered to the store, but not allowed to be released until specified date. This is what happened to my brother with the Alex Lifeson Les Paul - got a call that it was in, but couldn't get it for about 10 days (release date).

Although it could be sold as soon as it is in stock, a store would be putting its 'authorized dealer' status at risk. I don't know if Gibson has ever withdrawn that status before.

Me thinks a bridge cover, possibly a tail piece and realignment of the tone knob will work for me. I'm thinking the neck and the sound are going to be a lot like my "Studio" and I'm fine with that.

I decided to measure my 2021 NR birds neck at the 1st fret out of curiosity. Thought I'd provide some numbers here because it's quite thick:

1 5/8" nut width
0.91" thick at the first fret
Birds?? You got more than 1?

so, 1 5/8 wide and 7/8 or13/16 thick is not a problem. That is the same size as the neck on my Midtown and that is very comfortable to play.

Yeah, it's sounding more and more like the pickups are basically TB+ in a chrome or nickel cover. Suits me just fine, other than that they're backwards.

Go with your gut and get another real Thunderbird!
