Yet another thing I can’t remember…anyone know the neck radius on a modern Gibson ‘Bird? Thinking of getting a new neck for my PBass

Interesting, never seen that done before. But what really has my eye are those Jeeps in the background. Wish I had never sold mine, gonna have to get another someday soon.

Finally came back from a foundrycustomer, where I was supervising a refractory lining job, and have had some time to check out the, new to me, 1990.
First of all, it plays very nice. The neck is slightly thinner than on my Orville and it is also about 1 kg lighter than the Orville (under 4 kg compared to 5 kg). It balances well on a strap (as does the Orville too). It looks very good, I like the lighter burst on this one. There are very few scratches and everything works as it is supposed to work.
Except…
The neck angle is too shallow (as V poined out, this can be an issue with these early ones) so I cannot lower the action anymore. Now it is about 2,5 mm on the E, I can play it without a problem, but I would like to be able to adjust just a little lower. So I just ordered a Hipshot, that should cure this problem. Also one of the studs has lifted some mm, seems stable though, so I fix that too when I get the Hipshot.
The sound is not bad, with maybe a little more bite than I remember my 2012 having, but compared to the Orville…. Hmm…The Orville is much louder and more aggressive, with a more middy sound. The Gibson has more high end, and also seems to have more low end, and an over all more even sound across the board. Have not opened the picups jet to check what they are, will do that when I change the bridge.
In all, I’m pleased with the 1990, and when I get the Hipshot, it will be a very good, comfortable and good sounding player, for not too much money, I think. But will it replace my Orville…? That Tbird is gorgeous! Looks brand new.
Hint on the hipshot - I put one on my Goth to end a chronic anchor lift problem only to find that the hipshot started to lift as well. Solved that problem, I Fenderized the hipshot with five bridge screws and she holds fast now. That’s not to say you should do that to a pristine vintage bird, but I bring it up to point out how important it is to make sure those anchors are seated really good first regardless of which bridge you use.

I'll confess that I pretty much don't. I appreciate the talent. My 90 year old Dad, on the other hand, loves them. Watches all their videos, knows all about them. I'm guessing it's because of the two girls more than anything.

I can understand. I disliked disco then and now (may have something to do with the fact that I can't dance), but there is something about some of their songs I like.

As much as I don't care for ABBA, there's this one that's a whole lot of fun to play on drums. It's a fairly straight forward Phil Collins beat with no cymbals, but it has some quirks and is a lot of fun to add a double kick to.

I've pretty much always played in bands whose first job was to please the audience and that in turn would please management who would then have us back. I, therefore, have played a lotta songs I didn't like or possibly hated. ~3 minutes later, that song ended and we played something else. And I/we got paid for playing music. So I guess I'm a musical ho.

There's songs I hate listening to, but have a blast playing. Actually, there's not much I don't enjoy playing, so that makes me a musical slut instead of musical ho, right?

Clearly not. Such things end up with some leaf thing on it and it's written in English on the top and translated into English on the bottom as well for clarity.

Yah, I knew of them (I had a friend who worked for a design firm that had one) but such was out of my price range back then. I loved drawing on vellum with a rapidograph pen.

I got into the habit of drawing on fairly rough paper with a calligraphy pen. Just for fun. I also liked drawing with a 2B or greasier lead. It probably explains a lot. I don't draw at all any more. Maybe that's another thing I'll start doing again when I don't have a pesky day job soaking up time.

Well, you could grind metal off the bottom of the three point like crazy Dave did in one of his episodes of Dave's World of Fun Stuff. Hipshot is probably the better option though.

I hate ABBA! But I can appreciate how good they were.

I can’t say I ever put on some ABBA to listen to it, but I enjoyed playing it. Learning the bass lines and vocal harmonies was a lesson in pop music production.
And now when I hear the later movie and musical versions of those songs, I always notice the missing bass lines.

I admit, I really laughed when I read your post. This place is never boring. I'll stick around even if I can't play any longer. Some would say I'm already there....

I can’t say I ‘hate’ disco. Love Unlimited Orchestra or Chic were pretty great, for example. I never spent nearly as much time listening to disco as I did Bowie or The Cramps or The Replacements, but I can’t dismiss the entire genre. Lots of folks (and me to some extent) dissed Bowie’s Let’s Dance record because Nile Rogers, from Chic produced it, but I’d say that record has aged well and many appreciate all the stylistic changes Bowie made during his very long and beautiful career. The Stones even dabbled in disco (or ‘club music’) with pretty great results, though I was more than a little on the fence about it when Some Girls came out.

The description of your '90 makes me think my '91, now the Flamingo, had repotted sidewinders originally. I replaced them with Chinabuckers and have Thunderbuckers for it now. The cover band will be playing in front of three kids and a dog tomorrow night at a block party, so I don't have rehearsal tonight. I may finally swap out the pickups and take the Flamingo out for some exercise with new pickups tomorrow.

Some say that The Wall was Pink Floyd's entre into disco. Queen certainly did disco.

Nile Rogers is a great producer and I have enjoyed a great deal of what he has done. The entire genre wasn't bad, but there was a lot of terrible music in it. Perhaps no more than other genres. Perhaps just memorable due to my age and its pervasiveness at the time.

Disco was never something I sought, but kind of enjoyed a tiny few songs I thought were clever and interesting. The rest were channel changers. Same for punk and modern metal. I would never seek it out, but there are a few songs that I like enough that I stop on that channel and listen to the end.
