Always funny how things like this happen with Tbirds, two or three good choices, and then suddenly only one of them is viable, and it’s usually the one you wanted most. In this particular case it’s a shame the burgundy bird had to inflict damage to the blue bird to take it out of the mix.

BTW - that’s not just a tiny little finish check, it’s a full lift or mash of the bridge lugs and quite possibly loosened the inserts creating a potential chronic problem unless fixed, which in this case would also require repainting. I wouldn’t touch it for anything more than $1200.

Quick update. Guitar Center just called me from a Virginia store telling me the blue one is lightly damaged, saying there's a finish crack under the bridge. They are taking off 20 bucks, if I still wanted it. I asked what the return policy is, and they said I can still return it. I told them to send me a picture before I agree to taking it. It might be nothing much, but I might just say forget it and just take the burgundy. We will see.

Not sure what any potential hassle might be returning a scratch and dent model. I also think 20 bucks isn't much of a discount on what should be a brand new bass, but I'll see what the pics look like.

What are your thoughts?

The question I have is how the heck did it happen. Was it out on the floor?

I'm honestly surprised that there's isn't more damage to the front of that bass. It takes a heck of a hit to that bridge post screw to dent in mahogany like that. Must've been a direct hit too.

Yeah. I've never seen that. It did not leave Gibson like that.

...and at that price, make sure the inserts are secure, put on a Babicz (or....a bridge cover? ), which should cover most or all of the finish damage , and play on

Yeah, that is no minor issue. They might go to $25 off if you haggle.

Agreed. From the tone of the guy's voice when he said "something happened when we were getting it in", I sort of inferred it as an employee accident/negligence. Who knows how so, if that is the case. But it definitely could have been on the floor.

Interestingly, when I looked at GC's website on Thursday, all they had was burgundy. Then, as of yesterday, they had that one blue in stock. I wonder if perhaps they took it out of their system when damage occurred to figure out what they wanted to do with it. While on the phone yesterday, they also said they had one green, but then went back on that. I hope nobody buys that Pelham Blue for anywhere near what they are asking. If anybody should even buy it all.

As has sorta been said, maybe for $1000-$1150, with the understanding that if the inserts are stripped, full refund. It really looks like someone with no knowledge of the 3 point tried to 'adjust' it and f---ed* it up, possibly "Beyond All Repair"-thus, FUBAR.

My favorite phaser is the Small Stone.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking as well. I could get another MXR, which I love, but this TC Electronics sounds interesting--and is reasonable in price if it doesn't sound as hoped. From what I've read it's pretty similar to the Small Stone.

That's a great idea, but don't know if it's worth over $100 to me. But I bet it sounds great. Might see if I can find a used one, however. Thanks for the suggestion.

For $50 (as of a year or so ago), MXR would refurb a pedal. You might contact them. I sent in a used M81 Bass Preamp I bought because the DI was noisy. It came back quieter.

Also, I’ve been happy with my MXR Phase 95…

After my old old old P90 died, I picked up a “Script” P90, which I also loved. When I was consolidating my board, I added a Source Audio C4 and went down that rabbit hole.

That pedal kicked off my MXR Script 90, my EBS Octobass, and my EHX Micro Synth.

The C4 does a great job as a Phaser, and you can really dial-in authentic P90 or better phase-shifting. Only down-side is a somewhat steep learning curve, and the need for a midi switch to access all the presets you’ve created (or copied from the community).

There’s a great/helpful club of Source Audio enablers on TB, too.

I saw those and thought they looked very interesting. Thanks!

I agree Tanner--$20 sounds like nothing considering. Still, $50 sounds like a better starting point for a very minor flaw. This flaw is a $300 flaw in my book. Maybe more. No thanks. You make a good call on passing. Much more off and it would be a different matter.

In looking at it again, I'd pass unless the bass were about $600 or more off. This could be a real problem.
