Thunderbird Club

View attachment 950268 Well, for better or worse... I just couldn't keep out of the Classifieds. I've NEVER liked gold color on instruments before, but the 50th Anniversary bullion gold 'Bird just spoke to me for too long and I had to have one. Anyone have any idea how many of these were made? (pic from ad.)
I saw that one. I'm not thrilled by gold for the most part, but that one really caught my eye. Nice score!

I HATE gold hardware on basses/guitars but I love the 50th Anniversary model!! My wife gave me one as my 50th b-day present and it's a great bass. No idea how many were made. Some people speculate that it was 400 like other limited runs, but I have yet to see that verified anywhere and Gibson usually makes it a point to mention when something is produced in limited numbers.

I'm general, there are probably five to ten times as many guitars as there are basses produced every year. Just look at how GC and Sam Ash are merchandised (although Sam seems to have a wider, larger stock of basses, especially at their brand new San Diego location) to get a thumbnail idea. I suppose it maes more sense to sell(make to sell?) a thousand Robert Paulsons...I mean...Lester Pauls than 50 or 100 TBirds.

I'm totally speculating, but if Gibson doesn't wanna sell TBirds, there really ought to be a good reason why not.

I think they felt after all these years, that they are in fact too sexy. (excuse the P-bass content - if he were playing a T-bird, it would have been too too sexy)

Since our economy is (ostensibly) driven by supply and demand, I submit two explanations for this:

1. Far more guitars than basses wind up as wall ornaments.
2. For those that actually get played, it takes between two and four guitars to counter the power of one bass.

:)

The very first one, the non-metallic blue.

Ok here they come!...

This one cracks me up! KILLER!

Oh yeah, the Guitarbroker and description of that bird (and the white one) are comical, as is the price! But I do love the colour, I believe it's Frost Blue, I think the closest metallic paint would be Ice Blue Metallic.

Anyone else have suggestions or input on colours?

[/QUOTE] I love that pic! I have two such creatures, who fancy themselves feline roadies. They will appear from nowhere, when I break out my new T-bird case (they want on it and in it). They love to sharpen their claws on my nice gig bags for my other instruments. I love them but am way to anal to let their talons/claws near my new precious, as you have done with yours here. Cool color BTW (cat and bass).

They're not encouraged to climb into the cases and usually take no interest in instruments or amps. Their claws are clipped regularly so the bird was safe.

You could do that colour with a pewter base and white metal - is that magnesium? tungsten?

Chris Kael sig. but where's the brass knuckles bridge?

And it's a Rex, not a thunderbird.
Couple hundred $$ too much, I think.
I realize its a Rex. I was just throwing it out there knowing Nocturnal lives pretty close to that bass. We here in the Thunderbird Club are incurable enablers si dint ever ask us to tel you not to buy a bass especially if its in the shape of bird. Unless its a *a-hem!* 7ender.

My man cave groupie.

The below image/info might be common knowledge with all the veteran T-birders we have here. So, I will apologize up front if I am flogging a dead horse. However, I thought it related to our recent threads lamenting Gibson's marketing (or lack thereof) of the contemporary American T-bird. And it ties in with the brainstorming about the new color for the recent Greco purchase. According to the dude's site where I found this, when you bought a Firebird or T-bird from '63-'69, you could trick it out with these "custom colors" for $15. I guess that type of strategic thinking is too dated for Gibson of the 21st Century, when it comes to marketing a bass (and BTW that $15 cost is $118, adjusted for inflation).

I think they look best in '60s/'70s Muscle Car colors, especially MoPar, but Ford's Metallic Root Beer Brown would be pretty cool................

Plum Crazy........Me Like.

Ha! I'm with ya! Wasn't directing that at you, so
Much as the eBay listing calling it a Thunderbird, and not what it actually is.
And I love that bass, don't think I wasn't scouring the eBay ad! Lol
