Thunderbird Club

All this Peavey Mark series stuff of late could make me snag one at a pawn shop if I run across one cheap. I'm kind of missing my old Mk III. Heavy old war horse.

I stopped by the Pawn Shop that I used to keep afloat with over a year's worth of interest payments, just to browse their gear. I was in the neighborhood that day.

Before, I would simply go in and hand them $$$, because there was no point in lingering around. So, I see a Peavey Mk VIII head in xlnt condition. They wanted $150, and I negotiated a "loyal customer" deal of 20% off that price. So $120 + tax. Never owned a Peavey, other than a 1x8 practice amp. It's a heck of an amp. Built-in chorus... sustain... EQ galore... bi-amp out... passive or active input. Well, you guys know what these are. I think the VIII was the last in the line, and a couple earlier ones are more coveted. But I couldn't be happier, and lucked out, having the extra money for once. I bought a generic 2-button FS on eBay for the chorus & sustain on/off, with part of the money I saved on the amp. I've only played it through a Hartke 410 thus far, and each of my basses sound awesome through it. Got it to have as a backup.... but I think it could be my main rig now.

Makes you wonder.... if the shop wanted $150... what the dude in need of money pawned it for. And then couldn't afford to get it out (probably $100 ?). I doubt he just sold it to them outright, because he coulda got that, or more, on Craigslist.

Probably $50-60

Inlays - Check
Binding - Check
Hipshot bridge - Check

Why Gibson only sees the need to offer such nice things with GS's name attached is one of the mysteries of the universe. I'd put a real Thunderbird pickguard on it. Otherwise it looks great!

I wish they would:

1. Makes a reverse in an color other than black/white/sunburst and use the pick-up rings on this model
2. Make the NR with the reverse neck profile
3. Use a 2 piece bridge on both
4. Offer special order (left handed/custom colors/relicing (for those who like it)

and do it all in a semi-consistent fashion.

I'm new to the discussion - but has Simmons ever played a T-Bird like this on stage...in the past 5 years...?

Considering the signature Lzzy Hale Explorer, Dave Rude Flying V, and Nikki Sixx Blackbird models, that are modeled after ones they use live, I have to say the Simmons T-Bird might just be marketing. Not like Gene ever has a hand in that. :smug:

Woulda thought they'd do a GS Ripper or Grabber model instead.

Now that it is/has been released, I would bet you won't see him without one, He definitely knows how to market.

He played his G2 bass during an online concert broadcast but prior to that, he had played an ebony Thunderbird. Not sure how long or how many tours or which albums he may have used it on. It's all probably available online if you dig around for it.

Looks like he had an ebony Thunderbird as a backup bass to his Spector for a couple years and was out of the lineup by 1978. A few pics exist when used at the Largo show in 1977. Interesting to note that he had a Dimarzio Model One put in the neck position. You don't see that modification very often.

If I had the mad money (or desire) to buy a GS sig bass - I'd rather have a Punisher. But that's just me.

I was a Hip fan in the 90s and early 00s.

And then Gord Downie (singer) died. You couldn't get away from the Hip on the radio. I have recently started revisiting now that the hype has died down.

A couple of recommendations:
Locked in the Trunk of a Car
Fifty Mission Cap
Bookmarked. I will come back to those.

I like that mod idea. Still mulling it over for my Classic Pro.
