Thunderbird Club

So I'm trying to figure this one out...

The shop has this labelled as a Greco, but best I can tell this is a proper '70s bird. Doesn't look like the wider Greco neck, has the 3 screw pickups, label on back of headstock, large tuners. Stil think it's a refin, but weird of the shop to label it a Greco and not a Gibson...

I don't know the ins and outs of Greco's but I agree with you, sure looks like a 70s Gibson to me. Shop mislabeled it because it's not a Fender maybe? ;)

It even has the "Made in U.S.A." serial number sticker on the back of the headstock.

Yeah, at first I thought they had way over priced a Greco that had been doctored up to look like a Bicentennial, but looking at the details, I don't think someone would go to that length to make a Greco look like a 70s bird, specifically the sticker on the headstock, that's a detail I think most would overlook or be unaware of. Then there's the tings you can't really doctor up, like the fretboard width...

One kinda funny thing is that they used one of the pickup cover's screw holes in the pickguard instead of the centered one.

I believe there's a screw in both if you look closely, they just have the cover screws installed and those are not counter sunk like the pickguard ones so stand out a bit more.

It’s a Gibby bicentennial. Pickguard, logo, bridge, pups and neck all say so. “Greco” must be a typo.

I don't think that's a Greco at all. Looks like Gibson to me, though I'd want to check the heel shape and couple other things before I bought. There was some discussion of this bass on the FB group and I'm pretty sure it's the real deal - it's in Tacoma, not too far if anyone's serious PM me.

Mostly just rumors - The Non Reverse hardware placed on the Reverse and possibly a Thunderbird II. Hopefully something will show up at NAMM.

Hopefully a II with the pickup in the correct spot, and a tune-o-matic bridge instead of the 3 point. That'd I'd move some stuff around and shell out for.

yep - Gibson.

I would really like to get my green NR (on order since March).

Do they even have an estimate? Have other colours been available?

I have had the green Epiphone Embassy bass on order since march, other colours have come and gone recently but the green isn’t expected until July.

my burgundy NR isn’t expected until July also. I think I got lucky with my green and got the last one that came in.

L&M won't speculate as that is a fool's errand. And Gibson will give no guidance on when they will deliver. I think that when a few made it to Canada, there were very few green ones and I was later than others in putting in my order. The few that weren't spoken for did not last long.

It does kind of bug me with the look of going from large plates to the smaller tunas.

I am going to have to get over it though, as I’m looking to replace the tuners on my Greco…

I very much like those Hipshot tunas. I like the idea of adding screws back into the exposed holes.

I have used Wilkinson plate tuners quite a bit and they work very well and are just a bit cheaper, so I’m not sure where I will go.

I usually like the cloverleaf more than whatever you would call the other…. tulip? Not sure if it still needs to be a flower…. But the tulip does look good on a bird.

dammit! The Wilkinson plates are a little on the large side and I think I will have some issues getting them all to fit…. I did want to be cheap…

The Hipshots are almost twice as much but it’s for a good cause.
