I have used a flat head screwdriver as a slide.......

That said, I was told by the drummer I play with that someties I can get a "bow-"like sound by using this set up:

With the effects pedals on and the amp just feeding back, you get an almost "infinite sustain" which allows me to move from note to note, usually sliding into and out of each note. I am not sure I hear it but that is what he says and he likes jazz, so he must be right.....

I’ve always been told that it should be no rounds on Fretless as they chew up the fret board.
Therefore Flats are preferred.

So you have your settings opposite of mine correct? I'll try it but when I first got it a few years ago I spent a lot of time trying different settings before leaving it like I do. With my hollow-bodies I have a slightly different setting to control feedback but otherwise leave the 11-1 for everything; rehearsal, live and recording. (always on) I leave 3 pedals on all the time; the SS, the MXR d.i.+, and my compressor/sustainer.

Yes, that is correct as to how I set it. I fooled with it some after getting is and after a couple weeks I found what I liked and haven't changed it much in several years. But you've got me curious, so I'm going to try your settings and see how it sounds. Of course we're playing through different rigs, not to mention we're likely aiming for different tonal objectives, at least to some extent. But from what I recall of things you posted you have a nice thick tone, which is basically my objective. Sometimes bigger, some times punchier.

Mine is in the effects loop as recommended. That keeps it out of the way as well and it just sits on my head. People think it cool I play with a pedal on my head.

I was thinking of something with less wattage than my GK so I can drive it a bit harder - a 700RBII is insanely loud and you really can't get it to "open up" nicely at lower volume.

Likely not what you're looking for, but I had one of these years ago. One tube in the pre. I was going through various cabs at the time, none of which I was happy with so I got rid of the head thinking it was part of the tone problem. It was a nice head though their least expensive I would imagine. Very clean sounding and having some cool features. Some pre tubes did sound better than others. If I ran across one dirt cheap I'm likely buy it. I think---know it would sound better through any of the cabs I now have. Timothy B. Schmidt used SWRs for a good while and he sounded great. I think the Red Heads get the most love. Amps. Talking amps here!

placement.
Just me gang. Was never found of any sort of pick up positioned like that.

I'm with you. I've never played or personally heard a bass with a PU in that position that I liked. They may exist, but I've never run into it. This is in part what the modern Thunderbirds don't sound as good to me as the originals.

Is that correct? Seems like maybe 8600 and 8650g would be more realistic? But what do I know? I’m an American.

consider the source of the advice, mostly that comes from peepholes spouting what they read on the interwebz, and have never played fretless

then there are those that use a kung fu death grip with their fretting hand and transfer that to a fingerboard AND grind the string into the board laterally instead on linearly for vibrato

many of the above peepholes trust their string changes to the “luthier” at geetar centre

even if grinding the strings into the fingerboard is the sound you like, the fingerboard is a wear part and like frets, should be replaced or resurfaced when worn

to my ear flats on fretless sound like a really poopy version of an upright bass

I haven’t tried tapewounds on fretless but it’s not really my style, but Chris Brubeck sounds shaging phenomenal with them, and he sounds better than an upright

I just pulled that info from an on-line 'answer' to the question. Either way, 19lbs isn't light for a high-end bike that costs over 10 grand if those #'s are correct. !?!
