Thunderbird Club

View attachment 4536031 View attachment 4536032 View attachment 4536033 It turns out changing the pickup cover on a Les Paul Junior Doublecut bass is a non-destructive process. The only thing holding the cover on was the pressure of the screws pushing the cover/pickup down against the foam.
I pushed some lighter foam between the new cover and the pickup to hold it together.
The hardest part was cutting tiny screw heads and gluing them onto the trim ring.
Looks really nice with the chrome cover!

Depends on where in Kentucky and where in Colorado but generally not a bad drive seeing how it's a straight shot west.

I did 21 hours straight through on the way back from Florida over the Holidays, 1,340 miles.
I’ve made the trip from Cincinnati to Boulder many times, usually about a 17 or 18 hour drive. I think Bent is down in the Four Corners area of the state so add a few more hours, then subtract an hour if you’re starting in Louisville KY. So Dagrev is probably looking at about a 20 hour road trip assuming good road conditions and traffic, a heavy right foot, an effective radar detector, and minimal stops for fast food, gas and potty breaks. A doable round trip on a three day weekend. MLK holiday is coming up, mark your calendars.

Yes, I figured it would be a real pain getting it out. Interesting PU. Wonder how it sounds compared to the modern black Thunderbird PUs?
Sure looks a lot like the 2015 Tbird DeCola pup.

Not a chance of that happening, Greco is the best Thunderbird that no one knows about.

My new 88 only had a couple quirks of a 34 year old instrument for the most part...

definitely punched WAY above it's weight.

Now my $200 with case Epimophoam CP blows them all outta the water... (don't tell anyone about Epimophoams too)

is it the missing pg screw facing the bridge pup that gives the wonky pup placement optical illusion? hmm....this one's been bothering lol....other than that, clearly other pg shape differences..

Says 16 hrs without a stop from Pueblo Reservoir !

That's funny - mostly accurate on reproducing the vintage details, other than pg screw placement. Same number of screws but different locations. Did they not have at least a picture of a vintage NR or did they not realize how shifting them would create such mental anguish?

The new pickguard also gets closer to the edge of the body on the top bout.

Yes, there's a few differences in the cut, but I'd look past that. A pg today is most likely laser-cut precisely where as in the late '60s they might have still been cut using a jig-saw or stamp-cut. (compare the N pu opening on both)

(both) So nice! I love the contoured shades and windscreen cowl! It looks a bit like a '55 Chevy wagon.

Yes that was obviously the inspiration. The FE/FC range was 56-60. I came home from being born in the family FC sedan. The FC being a flashier facelift of the FE. The photos I shared were of the FC.
They were replaced by the FB (then EK) range which was more like a smaller 59 Chev with bigger tailfins that extended past the load doors on the wagon “Station Sedan” version. Even had the wraparound windscreen with “dogleg” pillar that thousand bumped while getting into their cars.
Eventually Dad came home with a EK Station Sedan, a grey with a white roof Special. The trim levels were Standard or Special. Taxis and fleets could choose a Business variant.

Saw this FB on the way home from Orange the other day. It is a sedan but you get it, I’m sure. (My cousin took the photos as I was driving).
