Thunderbird Club

I always wonder about the row of picks you see taped on mic stands. How many picks do some guys drop?
I fling them to the good looking girls who want them.

OK, I just made that up, but I rarely drop one, especially now that I drill a hole in the middle, creating the "Miles pick."

They sound good on Rics too. I've never tried them on a T-Bird. I think I had Chromes on one once but wasn't crazy about them.
I've tried Chromes many times and end up selling them every time. Big lows and clanky highs were about all I got out of them. But I have different rigs now, so I might give them another try one day. Fender's sound better and have more mids to my ears.

I saw Entwistle in a 100 seat club in 1999 in Worcester, Mass with the John Entwistle Band, we got there early and stood about ten feet in front of him along with every other bass player from central Mass. The stage was only about 2 feet high, I had played there myself many times. He would alternate between his fingers and a pick and flick the pick out into the audience when he was done with it. My brother was standing right next to me with his hand folded with his palms up. One of the picks hit him in the forehead and fell into his open palms during the song. He said "look!" and was quite pleased. His sound was amazing and he played VERY lightly, when he did his triplets it was almost like a butterfly touching the strings with its wings.

Ohh I got something out for delivery…. Not as exciting as the last delivery… but still..

Send a pic to Nashville. Maybe it will spark some creative thinking. If they can't get the neurons firing at the same time, maybe they will pay you to consult.;)
LOL - the last thing Gibby would want is me as a consultant, I’m sure I wouldn’t tell them what they want to hear. But if I did do it I’d insist on being paid in vintage Tbirds.

Dear GOD!!!!!!! :drool::drool::drool:
It is going to be amazing and if it doesn't sound as good as it looks, there are remedies. ;):)
Pretty much what I was thinking. I’m sure with the right tweaks I’ll be able to get it sounding good, but sounding great may be the real challenge.

@GBassNorth what body is that? I’m sure you’ve said, but I missed it.
The body was purchased on eBay from a builder named Gluff. He will route it any way you want, I chose neck and control cavity route only. The quality seemed to be good and the neck pocket is nice and tight, but I’ll hold off on a final endorsement until I’ve completed the assembly and set up, that’s usually when errors and poor workmanship become obvious.
Who cares what it sounds like! :hyper:
LOL - if all else fails it would make a nice wall hanging.;)

but is it black? or just dark sunburst hue?

It's translucent tobacco - a 'burst' finish staple for many years. More dark brown than black, although black is also used like on this LE.

Neck also painted opaque black - and the familiar neck crack issue...

:bag: Sorry! I'm not sure how that happened - I thought I was responding to @Bent77 's post (below) about his project bass... :wacky:
I figured that was for me, so I underment what you stood

That EB pickup in the neck actually sounds great, thick, and very good output. Until both pickups are on full

Then it sounds like what you said, big bar magnet cancels all of the pole magnet, and what is left of the bar magnet that’s not cancelled is all the sound you get? If that makes sense

I'm dealing with a similar issue on my parts P with a Fender PV63 N pu and a Dano-style (Kent Armstrong) lipstick at the bridge. With a 2 pu bass, the bridge pu needs to be hotter than the neck pu. Lipsticks use different potentiometers than a standard single-coil or bucker. I was a stacked V/V pot (ala Dano) but a 250k/1meg stacked pot is not available. Fender's passive TBX tone (stacked) pot is 250k/1meg, but it only has one shaft. The way it works, 1-5 is like a standard tone pot, and 5-10 is a clean 'boost' that sounds a bit like an active bass tone. It was introduced in their guitars and basses in the mid-'80s and is still available today. I've used it and it's a nice tonal option for a passive bass. Anyway, I'm experimenting with dis-assembling pots and recombining them to get that 250k/1meg combination and if I can pull it off, I'm hoping that will allow both disparent pu's to work together at the same output levels. Now that I think of it - I should send KA an email to see what he has to say about it.

I haven’t tried it yet, but heard that it’s relatively easy to swap the bottom pot on an Alpha stacked pot. They are apparently held together with a pair of small metal tabs. CTS pots look like they’d be more problematic to swap out but you might be able to open one up enough to alter the conductive surface of the disk. Keep us posted, I might need to do the same on the BlingBird stacked pots.

I've already adapted one but once hooked up - nothing works (no output at all) so I must have done something wrong somewhere. I've messed with stacked pots before with success so I'll just try again. The shaft needed to be re-defined but otherwise it's fairly straight forward. I also just sent Kent Armstrong an email to hear if he has any ideas. I've never seen a bass with a P & lipstick combo so I'm wondering if it's even possible.

thx JIO, you are my source of luthier guruness….please bear with me on this one…trying to understand this; are you saying that Gibson used both dark tobacco and black on the back of the headstocks on burst models? does it have to do with specific years? was it just done randomly? does this imply that there are sunburst birds with headstock repairs hidden under black paint cause some were painted black at the factory? how can one tell if this the case?
