Thunderbird Club

No real glamour shots, just some more of when it arrived. Been tracking a demo for a friend with it today, hopefully I can post the finished product soon enough.

Nice to see a Gibson and a Spector side by side... Makes me enjoy the original even more... :)

Although the Spector is nice, I think the original body shape is much nicer aesthetically... :)
I can't argue with you on that one. Of the two the Spector body is definitely more chunky and less refined /sleek / streamlined. Of the two, I like just about everything about the Gibson more with the exception of the sound, where each one shines in different settings.

I prefer this version of the Spector Bird:

The body is definitely thicker than a Gibson or Epi but the neck is nice and slim. Very easy bass to play. I am going to be modding the electronics so that it has more of that Spector growl that I like so much.

Him indoors has taken to dragging me in to ABH Pitt St to drool at the Ric 330 and 360 they have hanging up and yesterday pointed to a Gibson ES355 for $6500 and asked how young musicians are supposed to afford instruments, to which the obvious answer is 'they buy Epiphone'. He has also very kindly drawn my attention to the Gibson 'Birds on two separate occasions - it's almost as if he's TRYing to get me to spend money.

Og yes, that's more like it...

I like that a lot. Could you give me some examples/songs where the Spector growl can be heard?

It's actually pretty slow in the TBird sandbox right now. We need some glamour shots.... Post em if ya got em!

Those 50th T Birds are nice, there's a lovely one on ebay just now that looks like it's never been played

If customs wouldn't push the price up by 20% on top of the cost of shipping I think I'd have bought it but it just keeps adding up to unrealistic levels in the end

Here are mine!! My bass as it currently stands, last nights production & i did apply some bondo filler to some much needed areas (the broken wing still had a few cracks showing, some minor areas around the old controls & the bridge posts from when i had taken them out the first red/black repaint & a few on the neck where i had to repair it at the heel)

More progress soon enough, there isn't much to tackle on the body other than filling up the pickup cavities part way to have ease of pickup height setting without the strings being far off. The neck is the bigger part since i need to radius the board down a bit more evenly, remove the old & insert the new frets for better ring & drill the side dot inlay holes. That's about all i need to do before sanding it all down to 220 grit & painting the whole thing.

You just have to keep looking, I only paid about $1000 for mine 2 years ago and frequently see them in the $1200 range today.

Just finished the neck work: sanded down the bondo filler, also had to bring the thickness of the board down at some spots (only 1/16" over 5mm) & it's now fully radius'd again. I'm going to drill & insert the side dot markers, carve the board inlays deeper a bit & then i will stain the whole thing black again (minus the sides which will be red again). & then paint the inlays white to have them stand out just a bit. That will be it for the neck as of this week & the body will soon follow. Luckily, it's not much work to be done before i can paint it all again. I should have this one done for good by Xmas.

"Would" by Alice in Chains. Or really just about anything by them.

This video gives a rough idea of the sound. Right around the 55 second mark starts to indicate more of what I like.

Not a big fan of slap, but that guy is super tight and has a great tone, regardless how he plays.... :)

Great sounding bass btw - Are those active?

Let me get this right?:

You're drilling and inserting new side dot markers, then paint them over when you are doing the red faux neck binding, and after that you're giving the dot markers white paint to make them stand out????

Why bother drilling and inserting the dot markers in the first place, when you are going to paint them over twice?
