Thunderbird Club

This my fav "rock tune" of Bread. It's live and not a polished, but I prefer live instead of the 56 takes of a song anyway. Larry here as well. Or some guy that looks like him.

Yes! Few bands can conjure the energy of live music in the stuudio, and very few all play together in the studio. That synergy is where so much of the energy and really fun bits of the music originate. Most of my favorite albums are live.

And it has some words that are as important today as then.

Truth.

After studying your record collection, I thought it would be fun to post mine. Many are hard to read because they are a bit tattered from being pulled out to play for decades now. Some have a protective sleeve, but most don't. This is most of them, but I have another box of overflow LP's.

Wow! Lots of jazz and then some rock stuff I don't have either. Fred Frith's "Gravity"! A great album with good backing groups (Zamla Mammaz Manna and The Muffins).

I have to say that only two bands ever impressed me with live shows that were dead on with their albums, ELP and EWF. Not saying other bands didn’t put on a great show, just sounded different.

If we weren't each searching for that 'perfect' sound(combination of bass, strings, pups, fingers/pick, amp, whatever), we'd all be playing a P through a B-15.:meh:

agree - to a point... as in, I'd invite any 'challenger' to de-throne this combo...

There were a number of bands then that were known for their commercial hit songs but rocked otherwise. I inadvertently saw the "1910 Fruit-gum Company" who did "Yummy Yummy Yummy I Got Love In My Tummy" ~ and they did a rockin' version of the Vanilla Fudges "You Keep Me Hangin On" ... so do the math, The Vanilla Fudge covered a Supremes song, and the 1910 Fruit-gum Company covered their cover! :woot:

Lead singer looks a little to much like a young F'r Carlson...

To cleanse the pallet -

The Fudge is painful to watch here. The music is killer but they look like they are trying waaaay too hard too emulate their black musical heroes, but are lacking in visual soul. I can't find a vid of the 1FG doing that song. Bummer.

1FG was known for "1 2 3 Red Light". Ohio Express did "YYYIGLimT". Did 1FG cover it?

In the late '70s/early'80s, I primarily listened to Jazz and Classical, when 'hair-bands', 'arena rock' and 'new-wave' ruled. (~) Bands like The Specials, Madness, Selector & other 'black & white" retro-ska drew me back into rock later. I've seen Fred Frith (he lives in Marin) and have a few older LP's of his. Tom Cora also. And a number of early 'Material' LP's also along with other Bill Laswell related projects. (Praxis, Golden Palomino's, Massacre)

Entirely unrelated....I was at work and talking with the secretary. She was telling me about a program she watched about a writer (Dorothy Kilgallen) who had been investigating JFKs assassination and who out of the blue "took her life." This was highly unlikely. Anyway, I'm pulling up Youboob and one of the suggestions for me was a 2 hr documentary about.....Dorothy Kilgallen. I have never even searched or looked for anything related to JFK, and don't recall ever hearing of this writer. Big Tech is listening, so if you ever say anything about Thunderbird's neck diving or anything negative about Thunderbirds, there is a record of it somewhere maybe even some whack job's computer or laptop.

I know this kind of thing happens as phones are always listening, same with Alexa, etc. For that reason I refuse to have one in my house. The phone is bad enough.

Perzackle.

I wholeheartedly disagree - yes, completely over-the-top gestures while performing... but that is what was so great about the Vanilla Fudge. (IMO) They PERFORMED! (aside from "emulating" their source) Watch Tim Bogert (on the Fender bass) playing like a live-wire and singing with abandon - it's exaggerated, but real! I personally am not that performer nor will I ever be so when I see those who are (regardless of who they are black or white) - I am envious. Our guitarist Paul is like that - he can belt it out like there's no tomorrow. We do "Frenzy" (Screamin' Jay Hawkins) and "Ain't That Lovin' You Babe" (Link Wray) and he lets it loose (lead vocals) on both! Just to be able to sing background and play bass on those songs with Paul for me gives me access to his raw/unintimidated expression. I do what I do as best as I can but have great admiration for creative abandon in whatever form it takes.

First real bass was a 66 EB-3. Got used to Gibson neck profile. I held a P once. It was like 2x4.
I also played the TBird through a B-18 a coupla times. A-fricking-mazing.

Long ago I played in a duo, and we swapped between various electric and acoustics, and occasionally a P or J (I forget now). IT was kinda fun, but didn't make me want to quit guitar for bass. I really don't recall anything about it except that the plastic coated strings gave me blisters and I hated that fat felt pick!
A few years ago, I played a PBass when I sat in for Daniel who couldn't make it at the last minute. His bass was there and mine wasn't. It felt and sounded fine, but was a bit like dancing with a stranger if you're both trying to lead. Daniel and a couple other guys, meanwhile, *love* that bass. Whatever works, man!

Always wanted a Thunderbird, and kinda accidentally just bought one (late night lowball offer on Reverb that was accepted).
Now what are the options on replacing that ugly black hardware with chrome?

Yes - that can be done. Detail here at 11

Three pics of my vinyl collection.Thank/blame JIO...
Lots of prog rock, maybe too much. I hardly have time or place to listen to my LP's (small kids...) so it's mostly cd's in a car when driving alone. CD's are good too, especially since they're not in vogue right now.

But it's T-Bird Tuesday isn't it? I installed new strings and if somebody can't tell from the picture they are D'addario Pro Steels. Very bright. Sound good to me but probably ain't enough to save the beast from the sea of mud to which it (neck)dives eventually...
