*TI Flats MegaThread*

Replace the LTF4A with TI flat yesterday, without truss rod tweak, the Ti flat has zero neck relief. Need counter clock 1/4 turn on truss rod to get the .010 reading back.

Even tension chart list LTF4A has lower tension than Ti flat, but she has more tense on this experience.

Bout time TI made jazz flat sets
JF345 43-136 and JF365 44-136 with 32.5" (what most understand as short scale) winding length and 35.5" winding length defined as the confusing 32" short scale by TI. I want access to the gauges in those sets on a Mikro in particular for D tuning. Without modding strings, string thru's and other assorted methods of getting long strings shorter

I just put a set on my fretless Zon. Thus far the action feels good with no change from how I set for GHS pressurewounds - which surprises me. I really like the feel of them, which also surprises me somewhat - I wasn't sure if flats would feel weird after playing rounds and pressurewounds for decades.
I will need to do some adjustment in at least 2 areas.
Pickup height - the E is weak relative to the other strings. I can't raise the low side any more so I'll try dropping the treble side.
Overall sound - in rehearsal tonight the band said that the bass had less defined lows (than with the pressurewounds). The lows are very growly. I'm going to have to play around with that.
FWIW, these are a lightly used set, so I'm assuming they're already "broken in".

I've raised the action some to get more fundamental and less growl...
Still having some notes on the neck that are dull sounding. It's a Zon bass and I've never encountered that before. E (A string 7th fret) is just dull sounding. It's weird.

It could be a dead spot.

The new set has duller/life less E string on my PJ bass compare to the old set on my Vintera P which has flawless open tone.

Already email to Thomastik infeld few days ago, but no reply until today....

It's not a dead spot on the neck, never had the problem before. A dead spot on the string? Odd...

Loosening the truss rod lessened the issue. But ultimately I think Pressure Wounds are what I resonate with.
Loved the feel of the TI's, but not so much the sound, especially in the lower registers, where the PW's were definitely clearer.

I picked up a lightly used set of TI Flats from the classifieds here last month because I wanted to finally try them out.

I also recently had an unlined fretless neck put on a body to replace the original fretted neck which was in a permanent forward bow. The new neck is maple with a black ceramic fingerboard, the body is sugar maple and I have an active Reflex Silver P/J set with the active treble/mid controls, it's an interesting bass.

The bass was set up in the shop with Galli Tapewounds since I had a set I wanted to try, but I quickly took them off to try out the TIs and the Galli tapes have been hanging in the closet since. The difference in gauge, .115 on the Gallis vs .100 with the TIs hasn't caused any issues with string rattle so it was a smooth transition, aside from having to fight a small battle with with my bridge to get the Gallis back off. The unforeseen dangers of thick silk ball-end windings. The Gallis were nice strings, and I like tapes, but the low E was poorly matched to the rest of the set, being more of a dull thud than the rest of the strings which had a brighter, more growly character with more sustain. I imagine the upper strings would have deadened a bit with time and I can think of stuff I'd use the set for but they weren't quite the vibe I was looking for overall.

For me, so far, all the hype about the TIJFs has turned out to be accurate, I don't have a single complaint, the feel and tone of these strings are great, they even sound pretty nice unplugged. While I generally don't have a personal sound I try to replicate with all of my basses -- they're all set up with different strings/pickups -- the TIs are absolutely shaping my mental image of what this particular bass "should" sound like.
I have a set of DR Sunbeams coming in the mail because I've been wanting to try a set and I want to hear this bass with rounds, but I have a feeling a I'm going to want to put the TIJFs back on again. :)

I contacted Thomastik-Infeld about tensioning and de-tensioning the Ti Jazz flats over and over again.
Here is their response.

Our jazz flatwound strings have a steel core and there should be no problem winding and unwinding and rewinding these strings on the instrument, but you should work carefully on the peg so as not to create unnecessary kinks in the strings, because then the strings could break off more easily at the peg.

With plastic core or rope core strings, this may be so that they should not go up and down obnoxiously, because here these stretches can have an unfavorable effect on the sound.
I hope the information is helpful and you will enjoy our strings.

Kind regards from Vienna

Heinz Kovacs

So, swap 'em around all you want.

First time with TI Jazz Flats here on my 1997 MiM Jazz Bass. I had to adjust the setup, G output was very high, and I had to tighten a little the trussrod. Now it is perfect.
TI jazz flats are really as good as you all told they are, thanks. And they are still a bit bright because new.
I play Fender 9050 and LaBella flats on my Precisions.
I love the 3 differents sounds and feels I now have with my basses, and I think I will play more and more the jazz in the next months !
And I don't think I will come back to rounds one day...

I slapped a set of slightly used TI flats that had been sitting in my string drawer for a few years on my old 78 P. I'd forgotten how amazing they sound and feel. Crazy how every nuance of your playing pops through in a band mix. I've had labella's and fenders on this bass but I find the E strings to be to muted and dead sounding. The TI's are amazingly even string to string once they have a chance to break in.

Better to have forgotten how great they are than to have never tried them at all.

I’m renewing my vows with my Skjold 6-string, which I have had since new in 2006.

It’s in pieces presently. Pat Wilkins has the body; he’s finishing it in a dark, earthy red with a subtle black burst.

It’s been passive all these years, with a Creation Labs Redeemer circuit. While that situation is not broken, I might install a Nordstrand 2B-3B preamp when I reassemble it, for a change of pace. It has the correct number of knobs and comes prewired.

So, strings. It’s had a set of d’Addario Half-Rounds on it for the last ~8 years, because John Patitucci. I still have those and can certainly put them back on.

I have Pressurewounds on my Jazz bass and they are fantastic. A six string set for the Skjold is an option.

@Arthur U. Poon recommends EB Slinky rounds. Those are in the running.

But how about TI Jazz Flats? Thing is, much of that conversation is about P-basses and copping a great throwback tone. “Just landed the tour gig with Leon Bridges, how do I celebrate” kind of thing.

I play this bass in jazz combo groups, think Yellowjackets or even Pat Metheny Group. I’m wondering what a set of TI Flats would sound like on a dual split coil 6- string bass in a modern jazz setting, including soloing. Might give a cool dark tone that would work perfectly. Or might sound dead as a rock.

Do any of you have sound samples of your 6-string with TI Flats in this kind of musical situation?
