I don't know how it works in Japan. So you might want to bone up on what probable cause is and how it works here in the US.

I'm American, serving in Japan. I very familiar with copyright laws in the US.

Now about the lawyers. ya MS's legal team is HUGE, but they also have to weigh the cost of going after people who have large scale sales of pirated software (the geek squad debacle comes to mind) or going after a peon like myself, who only uses the copy of windows for personal use.
See those lawyers are NOT cheap, and for someone like me who has very little or no money, they have to weigh what it would cost them to sue me (see not a criminal case) and what they could recoup (ie: lawyers fees, court costs, travel expenses and so on) and believe me they can't get that out of me. I own no home. I rent, so they cant take that, I have no car either, so that idea is out the window as well. The only thing I have of any value are my guitars and basses. If youve seen any of my posts you would know those aren't worth spit....Well unless Squier Affinities or Jackson JS30's shoot up in into the thousands of dollars in the next few weeks.

Companies have and will continue to pursue piracy. Good luck.

I like linux. problem is none of my games do.
I find Ubuntu to much easier on my eyes so I get fewer headaches but ATI, and a few others hate linux so theres a tonne of hardware conflicts that I don't have time to deal with and as I mentioned I can't play my games...

ATI's support for GNU/Linux is pretty good re their newer products but they are in the habit of abandoning their older graphics cards. Fortunately things are starting to look up for that abandoned hardware:

Just to clarify, I genuinely believe that migrating to GNU/Linux (or at least partially incorporating it into one's PC rig) is a viable option for cash-strapped computer users *raises hand* and/or those who wish to get in on what is shaping up to be a significant evolution in global computer usage.

IMO Windows 7 is a winner for those who can afford it and its entourage of commercial applications and who are also willing to spend time contending with its needed anti-malware rituals.

Windows 7 does what it is supposed to do very well. MS seems to have listened to people that want a functioning computer again instead of the "Oh look, a shiney." crowd. Its nice to have bells and whistles, but it's nicer to have a computer that works almost all of the time.

That being said, I've used linux almost exclusively for over a year now, and toyed with it for a time frame longer than that.

I switched to RedHat 5.0 back in the '90s when Win95 bit the dust on my laptop. Upgraded to 6.0, but then got a shiney new WinME laptop.
Quickly switched to SuSE on that one. Got a WinXP desktop after that. Got tired of the anti-virus, anti-malware games. I discovered Ubuntu almost at its beginning, and started with Warty. I've lost track of how many Ubuntu installs I have done, probably close to 10. I still have old versions on various partitions. I think I still have Dapper installed, currently running Lucid. I'm not a gamer, so Ubuntu has filled nearly all my needs for years now. I will have to get a new box sometime in the not to distant future, this one is going on 8 years old and performance lags a bit. I'm really happy with Ubuntu though, not even really curious about Win7. I still have a second winxp box for MagicJack, iTunes, and the occasional crap site that requires Internet Explorer.

I use Open Source software because I won't pay a ~$200 OS licence per machine and because choosing to steal when I have other options doesn't feel right to me.

Besides, getting into FOSS has proven to be an interesting compliment to my self-taught PC hardware skills.

HOLY **** I CAN'T SEE A DAMN THING. the resolution is so high I have to strain (not good when your going blind in one eye.) If I can't fix this I'll have no choice but to go back to windows.
Gonna try and fix this, at least firefox (hate it) has a magnifier option.

CLI-centric? Not Ubuntu nor its many derivatives (Think GUI + CLI a la OS X.)

Just get VirtualBox and install Ubuntu from its .iso and then run it as a guest OS for a look-see.

Learn how to use GNU/Linux and never have to pay for software again. If one cares to do so then one can contribute to the development of FOSS by writing programs or manuals or how-to's.

For that matter there are some commercial applications written to run on leading GNU/Linux distros (purists hate this) and I'd expect that developing games for Ubuntu would be worth looking at as a market to exploit.

AFAIK any router will work with any OS. The only sticking point is that updating firmware often requires Windows but there are some routers whose firmware can be updated via GNU/Linux.

I don't mean to hijack a Win 7 thread but the issue of software piracy is a recurrent one which can often be remedied via FOSS.

I use Win XP on a 2 GB RAM for personal purposes, and Win 7 x64 at work. I am pleased with stability of Win 7 and appreciate addressing of huge RAM memory.
What are your experiences with software and hardware compatibility? I understand that companies like Reaper have upgraded their DAW to 64-bit, but how do I run existing 32-bit VSTs? Have most of hardware makers issued their 64-bit drivers for musical/recording equipment?

Just get VirtualBox....

I tried that out, and really wanted to like it. I just couldn't get it to work as smoothly for me as VMWare Server, so I went back to VMWare.

As for Windows XP Mode, you need a processor that will support virtualization. If yours does not, then there is a patch you need to also apply when setting up Windows XP Mode so Windows will do the rendering instead of the processor.

I stumbled on that a long time ago, and a lot have been useful. Some not so much.

On thing I found with older games is alot of them will not support multi core CPU's. The solution? setting you affinity for specific programs to a single core. then they run fine.

also some need to be run as administrator, or as xp emulation.

another isue I came up with is that win 7 does not come with some of the older DX's installed. solution? download and install the older DX runtimes.

these are the solutions I came up with and hae not encountered a problem with.
