Time to say something good about Microsoft for once

I've been running Windows 7 now since it was released - it's on my main PC (a Samsung laptop, which I bought with Win7 already installed about the time it came out) and it just rocks. It's a great OS, very stable, and has many features that make it waaaaay better than Vista.

If you're running a machine with Vista on it I would recommend an upgrade to Win7 like yesterday. If you're running an older PC with XP on it, then maybe stick with that as I think Win7 does make greater demands on your processor, memory and so on. I still use a very cut down version of XP on my music studio PC, which never goes online and runs only the OS and my music stuff - it's really, really fast. But for day to day online use on a modern machine, Windows 7 is just excellent. I don't think I've had a single bit of hassle with it since I got it.

How are you guys finding it?

Yeah, I know one or two Mac users who have said they actually quite like Win7. But I really don't want to get into a Mac vs. PC thing here as that's been done to death and such debates get very dumb very quickly, especially when either side tries to prove that they're "right" about their system being "better" when it's really just personal preference.

A more meaningful comparison would be between Win7 and its predecessor. As will be obvious, I agree strongly with what seems to be the general consensus that MS dropped the ball with several aspects of Vista but have re-established a quality operating system with Windows 7.

Theres a few things about 7 I don't like.

1 No folder size option on the status bar. Microsoft never added it to the shell.
Easily fixed though with a mod.

2 Most of my XP games will NOT work on Windows 7 x64.

3 I don't like the layout of the control panel.

Other then these three minor problems I like this OS. Funny enough 7 is everything that Vista was supposed to be.
7 is much more stable then any other OS MS has ever released, in the 6 months I have had it, not one single BSOD, or lock. It feel faster as well.

I say windows 7 is most definitely a win.

I dig it, I've been using it as my primary OS for about a year now. Vista was definitely garbage, comparing it to 7 is like comparing ME to XP.

I make good use out of the sidebar on my second monitor, I have gadgets for CPU core usage and temps, RAM usage, GPU usage and temp, network meter/monitor, and a NHL scoreboard checker.

I expect a good percentage of this is due to the fact that it is x64, 32 bit seven would probably run them fine.

I've actually not had many problems what so ever running older games on x64 seven. One of two of them have not worked because its a 64 bit OS, but on a whole i've been quite impressed with how many work with only a little tweaking.


I think that my favourite thing by far is the little button in the bottom right that takes you back to the desktop. Seriously, whenever I get back on a previous OS it drives me mad not having it. Such a simple addition in the scheme of things, but so useful :D:D

I daily use an old Mac G4 and a brand new Win 7 PC. The PC is good for many things: it's fast, it handles multiple programs without crashing all that often, and the Win 7 UI is just as good as the Mac UI ;). And I agree about the boot stability, I usually leave the machine running 24/7 and just let the monitor sleep, with no problems.

But I have to say it pisses me off fairly regularly too. Every time I try to install new software, or update existing software, it interrupts with several error message popups telling me either I don't have authorization to install a given file, or that there is not enough memory to install it--when neither of those things is true. Each program takes at least two tries through the Install Wizard.

That's the only problem I have with it, but it's persistent enough and annoying enough that I avoid new software unless I absolutely need it.

Pirated usually = malware/spyware.

Have you considered buying a legal copy of Windows or at least trying a legally free OS like Ubuntu?

Being a MAC convert ... I gotta say, Windows 7 is pretty darn good, with some pretty cool and convenient features. It's much more stable than XP. I've only had it freeze up a couple of times in a year (which is pretty good IMO). (both OS's are running on Toshiba Satellites ... the Windows 7 is on my newest Toshiba laptop)

I still prefer my older MAC for graphics work ... but Windows 7 is a solid OS for the average day to day stuff. Sure you still have to deal with the typical Windows/Microsoft stuff ... but $ for $ ... Microsoft has a winner on it's hands. Finally.
