Time to say something good about Microsoft for once

Nah, I've read his other posts, and actually decided to put him on my ignore list...
Ah I feel so hurt.
I guess you don't like that I actually have reasons for the things I do and I don't require your help.

OT:

Another thing I like about windows 7 is how you can do the speech recognition. I have a few friends who are blind and this works wonders for them. Granted it's a pain at first since the system must learn a lot of things but as you progress it gets much easier.

You're completely wrong in your assesment. Just because you don't believe you've committed a crime doesn't mean you haven't.

Anyway, like I said - we have your email, every IP you've ever logged in from, and your admission that you've pirated software. Good luck with that.
AND

EDIT:
See thats the thing. If you turn me in then You must also turn in EVERY person who has ever stated that they download music, or anything else thats illegal.

AND believe me there are TONS of posts here where people have admitted to downloading music.

*I* don't have to do anything. I could just turn you in - as a concerned citizen. Then, when Microsoft comes looking, we would naturally turn over your IP addresses and email.

Pacman & Alucard817: thanks for the great contributions to the thread!

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of W7 or most Windows OSs. It dumbs things down too much for me. Everything is hidden behind a "user friendly" GUI. I love opening up a text editor and just editing configs that way. It's much more simple IMO. Plus it has some fun DRM stuff I'm not too wild about. Plus with how it always checks the hardware etc. That aside, it seems like a decent OS. I've tried the current release and I also tested the beta. It's up there as far as Microsoft OSs go.

Yeah, my OS of choice is Emacs, however Windows 7 isn't sucky. Though I'd describe it as "everything you already paid for already in Vista but didn't get".

(side note from an EFF weenie: as I understand it, non-commercial copyright infringement is a civil, not criminal, matter)

Now your proving you don't understand how IP's actually work.
That IP you see isn't actually MY IP, that is the IP given to me a hub, that myself and about 5,000 other people are connected to.
Not to mention that MS won't do **** with the info because all you have is CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE. A few posts on a forum does not a case make. IP addresses can be spoofed, hacked or even masked so the IP and email are completely useless to you or even MS.
In order for anything to come of it the authorities MUST get a warrant, and in this case they can't because theres only some shmuck on the interwebs saying UNVERIFIABLE comments. So please dispense with the empty threats I'm too intelligent for that.

WEENIE? well...ok I guess.

And yes you are correct sir it is in fact a civil matter.

This is why NO Pirate in the US has ever been arrested, incarcerated or tried in criminal court.

Not true. Large-scale non-profit and "any-scale" for-profit pirates have been. Small-scale is still actionable, and the burden of proof is lower in civil court...

That may be true, but given that all you're the only user from that tampa verizon IP address to log in to TB ever it won't be hard for your service provider to give you up.

A few posts on an internet forum don't make a case, but they DO make a case for probable cause. That's enough for a warrant, and let's face it - Microsoft has BILLIONS of dollars, and a legal department just to fight piracy. Your lawyers' fees would drive you into bankruptcy before they break a sweat. There's more than one way to 'win' at the legal game.

But you're too smart for that.

That doesn't mean **** dude Im still one of 1,000's not to mention that the IP or email by themselves don't mean ****.
In order for ANYONE to get my home IP they MUST have a warrant. The ONLY way to serve a warrant is FOR A CRIME TO HAVE BEEN COMMITTED.
Not to mention that you really have NO IDEA who this really is do you? I could be some 13 year old kid in Bosnia, or a 50 year old man in Britain.
Now you will in your ignorance simply point out where the IP points to, without understanding how it works or how it can be circumvented. So please stop using the tired "I HAS YOURZ IPZZZ" argument.

Am I this Alucard cat??? Who knows?

Ok let me break it down for ya. Even if I were to say I am going to kill john doe on this forum, even then it's still not a basis for probable cause. See many things are lost in printed words, such as inflection, sarcasm so on and so forth.
Actually Probable cause isn't the case here either. see your still refering to this as criminal, this is NOT criminal case, this is civil.

Definition of probable cause
A reasonable belief that a crime has occurred, is occurring, or will occur, which is sufficient to justify an arrest of a person, a search, or a seizure of property. It is often described as more than a mere suspicion.

I don't know how it works in Japan. So you might want to bone up on what probable cause is and how it works here in the US.

Now about the lawyers. ya MS's legal team is HUGE, but they also have to weigh the cost of going after people who have large scale sales of pirated software (the geek squad debacle comes to mind) or going after a peon like myself, who only uses the copy of windows for personal use.
See those lawyers are NOT cheap, and for someone like me who has very little or no money, they have to weigh what it would cost them to sue me (see not a criminal case) and what they could recoup (ie: lawyers fees, court costs, travel expenses and so on) and believe me they can't get that out of me. I own no home. I rent, so they cant take that, I have no car either, so that idea is out the window as well. The only thing I have of any value are my guitars and basses. If youve seen any of my posts you would know those aren't worth spit....Well unless Squier Affinities or Jackson JS30's shoot up in into the thousands of dollars in the next few weeks.

Here we go again.
1 I am quite the tech when it comes to PC's I have quite a few builds under my hat, as well as nearly a decade of trouble shooting both hardware and software issues. So although your help is appreciated, It's not needed.

2 There are a number of games that will not work under 7 x64. Mainly games that rely too heavily on DX9 or DX8. One that won't work for me is Jaws Unleashed, many others also have this problem so I doubt it's me or my copy of windows.

3 Nope sorry this copy is clean. How do I know? scanned the ISO with three anti-virus programs. Yes you can scan the contents of ISO files. Also with my security settings no data comes in or out without me allowing it.

About your "software stealing" comment I point you to this rebuttal.

Then you could likely figure out how to have Ubuntu or another GNU/Linux distro meet your needs in an affordable manner.

Have you tried it? If not then you may be pleasantly surprised. I was, which is why I switched to a 100% Ubuntu rig after dual-booting with Windows XP Pro SP2 & 3 on a desktop PC and Ubuntu + Win 7 on a notebook for a while.

Windows 7 is a very good OS BUT its cost, restrictions, and time consuming malware protection racket are too much for me to bother with.

I like Ubuntu.

*cough*

a quick word:

Based on 20 years observation of the tech industry: Never **** with Microsoft

Based on 2 years observation of TB: Never **** with the mods

and you might want to read some of the rules regarding creative spellings of banned words

(and courts can issue subpoenas for civil cases as well)

I like linux. problem is none of my games do.
I find Ubuntu to much easier on my eyes so I get fewer headaches but ATI, and a few others hate linux so theres a tonne of hardware conflicts that I don't have time to deal with and as I mentioned I can't play my games.

Many have messed with MS and won, it just depends on how you mess with them.
I'm not ****ing with a mod hes ****ing with me. I didn't start the debate, I didn't attack pacman, he attacked me. I'm only defending myself.

True courts can issue subpoenas, but the suing company still has to weigh losses against earnings, and I don't see anything I have that could even come close.
Also as I stated before Microsoft saves their big guns for big fish. I am certainly NOT a big fish.

Pretty lame to threaten to turn someone in just because he admitted to using an illegal copy of software. It's not as if he were trying to share his copy with anyone else here.

If you disagree with his methods thats one thing, but this crosses a line imo. Especially if you think he's taking such a big risk even downloading said software why do you even need to get involved? If you follow that line of logic then he will get caught without you interfering anyway.

Careful there, just because you're right doesn't mean you won't get an infraction or a ban for criticizing a mod here.
I only criticize when it's warranted. Actually I am a mod on another site and if I ever acted towards a member as Pacman has acted towards me, I would be the one getting a warning or even a temp ban.

I'm going to install 3.11 tomorrow as a reminder to see just how far Windows has come. :)

-Mike
Man that brings back memories. Win3.11 was the first version of windows I used.

I'm just saying, I have received infractions and temporary bans from this site for exactly the same level/type of interaction, and in most of those cases I was and still am confident that my statements were totally warranted. Being right does not exempt you from the wrath.
