Time to switch to Dunlop Super Brights!!!

That's it, I'm getting two sets.

IME, XL's nickels die sooooo quickly. 3 weeks and they sound like flats on a cheap p-bass knockoff. Never tried the XL's ProSteels because they don't have it at nearby stores. Dunlop it is then.

YMMV but I don't like Prosteels at all. I don't use steel anymore period, but I did for like 10 years and I used Dr Low Beams mostly. superbright nickels are on all my basses now that don't have flats. Great string and under $20 for a five string set just can't be beat

Yeah neither one will give you that zing and clank that you get from Cobalts.

So far the best price I have found for any set of Dunlop string is $18. I order mine from Amazon. I don't have to pay for shipping with them so I save a dollar or two than ordering them from just strings. If you know where I can get a better price I'm open.

I tried a set of the nickles and really liked them. So when basstringsonline had them on sale, I bought 4 sets and strung all my basses with them. Four gigs in on my #1 (Fender Jazz), I broke the E string mid-song. Came completely unraveled at the bridge saddle. Emailed them and they responded within the hour and immediately sent out two new sets for my troubles. Got them and they were the wrong gauge. Emailed back and it'a been 48 hours with no response. So between this and the repeating stories of string manufacturing quality, or the lack thereof in many cases, I think I'm steering clear here and cutting my losses. It's back to Rotosound for me.

I was exactly in the same boat as you except I hadn't tried Cobalts before I tried the nickel Super Brights. After reading the reviews I tried the Dunlops and just flat out didn't get it. Manufacturing quality of the strings seemed really sloppy to begin with - there were huge gaps in some of the windings.

Needless to say after I tried Cobalts my string search effectively ended.

Zingy? Yes. Clanky - I don't really hear that, at least not in the stainless steel sense of clankiness. Cobalts are highly defined sounding strings and very unique in their frequency range.

www.bassstringsonline.com will beat anybody. They had them for $11 a while back on a special sale. Also free shipping.

Bongo, a while back in this thread, you mentioned that they tweaked the formula of the SB Nickels. Well I had a few sets of the old ones, recently ran out, and just got some new ones, and they sound identical to me. You wouldn't happen to know what was done, would you?

BTW, I just got a set of their flats, and they kill, too!

I have a set of their flats ready to go. Just waiting to get some more use on the rounds first and then I'll make the switch. Did you lose a lot of definition with the flats?

As far as I know they just fixed whatever issues they had with intonation or gaps in the winding. Although I've been through about 30 sets and I've never seen those issues, sounds like a couple of folks did.

I had a couple D strings with intonation problems, but most sets I had were just fine so it's all good. Never saw any gaps in the windings, though. OK, thx for the info!

Just to update here, I waited almost a week with no response so I emailed Dunlop back. The rep was extremely apologetic for overlooking my email. He indicated that he would overnight the correct gauge sets to me. The next day I received a box that contained SIX sets of strings. Talk about going above and beyond. I really like these strings so considering the lengths Dunlop has gone to make good, I feel compelled to give these strings another shot.

I strung my stingray classic with Dunlop super bright nickels I got as as a (I got 2 packs from Daryl as replacements ) when I tuned up the g it snapped!! So I I had to grab one from the 2nd pack they sent

They sound amazing! But now I have a set with no G string:laugh:

I emailed them last night but no response yet
