Because the early '70's saw the emergence of prog rock and the beginnings of fusion as well, where jazz met rock (not to mention the decline of am radio), it's a good place to look for some "different" sounds from the classic rock main vein.

He did? Very cool!!! The Long Beach Arena was the place where I first saw Yes back in the 70's. After being a die-hard Yes fan since 1971, I finally got the opportunity to meet them and talk with each of them separately backstage after a Yes concert in 2000. Chris and I talked about Ric basses. It's an event I will remember for the rest of my life!

My custom Slacker radio stations are 80's Alternative and classic punk. Great way to avoid any of that tired classic AOR crap. Having moved FAAAAR away from having to hear it any more, some things that I used to be sick to death of are sometimes nice.

I've been listening to and playing the same songs for so long that I'm risking serious burnout, and don't want to lose my love for them. Beatles, Cream, Creedence, Aerosmith, Grand Funk, Skynrd, Allman Brothers, etc. Stuff played on FM back in the day, now heard over and over on satellite.

What I need is the name of great bands I missed out on back in the day, or maybe bands that had only one or two great LPs. For instance I've never listened to King Crimson or The Stooges. Maybe stuff too hard, heavy, or controversial for terrestrial radio back then.

So who else am I missing out on?

What I did when in your shoes was to turn my attention to r&b and then eventually to funk. Start with the Stax and James Brown library and work from there.

I was thinking along these same lines. The Meters, Earth Wind & Fire, Ojays...

Big Star- #1Record
King Crimson- In the Court of the Crimson King

Seconding Big Star. #1 Record is really good but Third had some unbelievably good gems (slower record, not as rocking but beautiful songwriting/guitar playing).

Really interesting to me that no one (that I've seen) has mentioned Lenny Kravitz here. Yes, some of his stuff is more funky but much of it is straight ahead rock that sounds like it could have been recorded in the 70s.

Their early stuff is experimental and later stuff gets to be too much of the same. But these two albums are great.

Bassist is awesome imo and live they are tight and sound better than their recordings.
