I'm not going to try and read through 100+ posts to see what all othwrs have suggested but there's so much out there that corporate playlists simply wont touch. Then again some of the masses are so conditioned to that sound that you cant deviate.

Within the rock & blues rock vein: Zappa, Gov't Mule, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, The Tragically Hip; just a few of the top of my head that the corporate radio for classic rock in my area wont touch.

Beyond that even, broaden your pallet & delve into other genres of music.

At any given time I might be listening to Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Alternative, blues, old country (dont care much for the new pop-country), bluegrass, Funk influenced soul / R&B type stuff, Gospel & some of the better CCM artists.

I play allot of CCM material but there's only about 10% of it that I actually enjoy listening to.

Anyone mention King's X yet? Gretchen Goes to Nebraska especially is pure magic. You want vocals, guitar, and depth, has it in spades. One of my faves of all time.

I've been listening to and playing the same songs for so long that I'm risking serious burnout, and don't want to lose my love for them. Beatles, Cream, Creedence, Aerosmith, Grand Funk, Skynrd, Allman Brothers, etc. Stuff played on FM back in the day, now heard over and over on satellite.

What I need is the name of great bands I missed out on back in the day, or maybe bands that had only one or two great LPs. For instance I've never listened to King Crimson or The Stooges. Maybe stuff too hard, heavy, or controversial for terrestrial radio back then.

So who else am I missing out on?

Let me make a recommendation that helped me. After playing in cover bands with the same setlist for about 5 years, I took a break. Not only a break from playing in crappy cover bands, but a break from listening to classic rock. So during the week I do not listen to any of the same tired classic rock on the radio. I listen to smooth jazz and new wave. I then listen to some classic "butt" rock on the weekends only.

Much fresher! Still not sure I am ready to stay up to two in the morning playing skynyrd again though!

Check out Cry of Love (Audley Freed’s old band). One of the better ‘90s bands that never got their due.

Then there’s Black Country Communion. Modern-day version of a ‘70s supergroup.

Have known and liked Rhinoceros since back in the day. Still have the LP.

You should check out John Mayer if someone hasn't suggested it already. Heavier Things and Continuum are really good blue eyed soul albums that fit a lot of what you are looking for. Mayer is probably the closest thing to a modern day Eric Clapton there is. Good songwriting, fantastic/amazing guitar playing, and plays with world class musicians like Pino Paladino and Steve Jordan.

I admit to not reading the full thread but I'd throw Zappa out there. For me I love overnight sensation, apostrophe, and one size fits all. They are all early 70s and have a similar vibe. I like the combination of irreverent humor, technical playing and composition, and overall ridiculousness.

I’m surprised that nobody mentioned The Bangles. I never get tired of watching their videos.

Just yesterday evening I was thinking about this, because the only radio stations in my area worth listening to play classic rock all the time & never add anything new.
How many times can a guy listen to Hotel California & Comfortably Numb w/o getting really bored of it?

I'm even bored with what I have loaded up an a thumb drive, so time to put something new on there.
Too bad the only station I liked with new music switched to 80's pop.

That should be enough to get you started. Please check back and let me know what you think of any of 'em that you're not familiar with (obviously some are in the category of "everybody knows 'em" but there are some gems hidden in the deep cuts that us radio generation kids might not have caught the first time around.

A bit of an off-topic rant here: It bothers me when people say there is no good music nowadays... those who say that are those who don't bother to search for it.




If you want something completely different and you want to get into jazz fusion this is a great point to start from. Casiopea, a japanese band from the 70's/80's (I guess they still exist though):
