Fanny (Bad A** all female rock group from early 70s)
Status Quo (English Good time rock and roll)
Johnny Winter (Blues rock, 1st two records, Progressive Blues Experiment and Second Winter)

I'd go mad just listening to rock/pop. What about jazz? What about classical? I stumbled on an artist while flipping the dial and landed on Austin City Limits. Sarah Jarosz, a twenty something blue grass rooted musician. And what a musician! I had to see her live. This young woman struck me as something of a genius. Sometimes inspiration comes when you step well outside of a comfort zone.

This talented bluegrass-country singer, songwriter and fiddle player, has taken home 27 Grammy's and many CMA and ACM awards. This girl has twelve studio albums--four solo, six with her group Union Station, and two collaboration albums (one with The Cox Family, the other with former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant). She has also released four compilation albums, one live album (with Union Station), and over 30 singles. Her most successful album, Live, has been certified 2× Platinum. But her pure angelic voice can make you cry. She has collaborated with everyone great in all genres of music and has definitely made her mark. My favorite Alison song is "Baby Now That I Found You."

I've been listening to and playing the same songs for so long that I'm risking serious burnout, and don't want to lose my love for them. Beatles, Cream, Creedence, Aerosmith, Grand Funk, Skynrd, Allman Brothers, etc. Stuff played on FM back in the day, now heard over and over on satellite.

What I need is the name of great bands I missed out on back in the day, or maybe bands that had only one or two great LPs. For instance I've never listened to King Crimson or The Stooges. Maybe stuff too hard, heavy, or controversial for terrestrial radio back then.

So who else am I missing out on?

I am assuming you like good bass lines, check out The Police, XTC, Ian Drury and the Blockheads, Steely Dan, Earth, Wind and Fire, too many bands, too little time. Oh, yeah, Weather Report, Wayne Cochran and the CC Riders should be part of the list.

From that era, Gentle Giant, Steely Dan, Slade, Jeff Beck’s Beck-Ola, and Oo LaLa albums with Ron Wood on Bass, and Rod Stewart singing his butt off, and Traffic. As a bassist, I see you don’t have any Motown there, so you really need to check out Jame Jamerson the main bassist for all of that stuff as a study.

There is a ton of good music out in the festivals. Check out the names of the bands and look them up on YouTube. A lot of them are mashing up genres, and some of it is extremely good. But break up YOUR genre of listening. Check out West African Highlife music, Chinese heavy metal, obscure but talented older bands like Be Bop Deluxe, Big Star. Check out alt-country like Lucinda Williams or Rodney Crowell. Check funk like Orgone, Turkuaz and Con Brio.
