I think the technique is an overused dinosaur that decided to die an ugly and gruesome death in the form of hundreds of thousands of teenage Flea wannabes cranking the Ampeg stack in GC to 7 in order to show everyone how awesome they are.
Seriously, no one has done anything cool with the technique since Stanley Clarke.
And yes, I do slap and pop, because I hold myself to being as versatile a musician as possible (note: versatile does not mean wanky, I don't double thump or do the Matt Garrison thing because they're exactly like slap, except completely useless in a commercial setting. One of these days I might learn them if I'm really, really, REALLY bored).
