Can anyone tell me the best way to burn stuff from cakewalk to CD? I have an applet version and can't figure out how to convert it. I know it has to be easier than I am making it.

AS oysterman has pointed above, it could possibly be the behringer preamp. You could be right also, cubase VST EQ could also be the culprit, actually anything is possible; even though I've never had any problem using the EQ in cubase(being muddy or harsh[too bright] for that matter).
However, I admit that I almost never use any of cubase eq, processor, efx. I use a Yamaha DSP factory mixing software that I use for everything in Cubase. That includes the input to the computer.
And since my own personal computer at home is a PC, the protools I use is the protools free version, which I use for editing faulty audio, like cutting, pasting; things that I find easier to do in Protools than in cubase for example.

then i use audio techinica mics from my bass amp to my 4 track..
I run my drums into my 4 track..
and my vocals into it directly as well is the drums and just worry about headphones..
Then i transfer the song onto the computer with a 1/4 inch cabele with a rca adapter into the mic port of my computer.
sounds ghetto but its been working for 4 or 5 months now

I only MIC the amps. I like the kind of "live feel" it gives. I write and add the drum tracks first. Then play bass, guitar, and sing. Now the step that's getting added is I am adding a lead guitar track last as I get more comfortable with playing guitar leads.
The Multiquence software is $25. The Cool Edit I think was $30. The Drum software is freeware. The sound card was $40. The PC was $400. The MICs were $150 for the pair. Guitar amp $60. Bass amp $425. Guitar $160. Basses $400, $180 and $290. So my studio costs...
$2160... or $3360 if you include my other Jazz and PA equip. But I only use them live.

I use ProppellorHead's Reason 2.0. Its got a number of pre-built .REX loops which sound great, and it also has the "RedRum" drum machine so you can formulate your own beats. I'm horrible at coming up with my own beats so I will pick a simple loop and then add miscellaneuos percussion with the RedRum.
Its a pretty deep program that you can do a lot of stuff with. Any other Reason users out there?
All I can say is stay away from anything Soundblaster or Creative. I don't what they think they're doing advertising their cards as suitable for live recording, it's just not true and the drivers are garbage. Get something from Echo or M-Audio, they don't cost that much more. Use a nice DI box, hopefully tubes, throw out the Line6 POD and make sure your computer is up to the task.
