After Stevie finishes first soloing listen to Albert begin to solo. He changes tone several times within three licks with no pedals and no reaching to volume or tone controls.

Tone comes from your hearing. When you are younger, roundwounds sound bright and sparky as your ears are new and work properly. When you are older, you put brighter and brighter strings on in a futile attempt to try and get back that sparkle that is long gone from your ageing, dull hearing. Eventually there is nothing left but misery and vodka. And flatwounds, which I prefer anyway.

Tone is a moving target that ducks and weaves with each venue we play in. Sometimes we get it into the box and sometimes it escapes and dances around us with a teasing look in its’ eye.

Looks like we will have to figure out what it is before we can figure out where it comes from. I’ve heard good tone coming out of my amp before, but I don’t think it originated there....
