Too passive aggressive?

I already know the answer. But I have a gig coming up with some buddies, all covers. And someone put a white stripes song on the set list. I HATE the white stripes passionately. It's guitar wanking music, and jack white sucks at guitar almost as much as meg white sucks at drums. If you were Joe Satriani and you made every song suffer just so you could wank off on the guitar that might be one thing, but when every song suffers just so you can wank off on the guitar, but you actually suck at the guitar, what's the point man?

So anyhow, this is one of their many songs that doesn't even have bass guitar. So I'm dying to just sitting there while they play it, true to the record. When that song sounds awful compared to the rest of the set and everyone looks at my sideways, I can just say I'm being true to the record and sitting this one out!

Anyhow, I love my bandmates. I don't want to be a passive aggressive turd. But god, the white stripes suck.

Moan fest over.
Perhaps the song's lack of bass is them sending a message?

There are thousands of tunes to pick from. In our group we have a bargain: if for any reason a member loathes a given track, we scratch it. Typically the member offers several possible substitutes. Doesn't mean it can't be reconsidered at a future date and doesn't necessarily apply to a given artist's or group's entire repertoire - it's track by track.

Will the audience miss the French Horn in 'Enter Sandman'? No? Because there isn't a French Horn in 'Enter Sandman.' Putting a French Horn part in that song - because you're a French Horn player - wouldn't fly.
So why pretend there's a bass part in the WS song?

We were lucky to get a drink ticket or a piece of pizza.

Oof. I remember those days.

It got people involved and moving when the guitarist was busy looking down at his fretting hand. Definitely set the tone and it was cool to have the room rocking, even if I wasn't musically leading the charge.

Playing live is always for the audiences benefit. The most fun I've ever had as a musician wasn't playing my most technically demanding part, it was always getting people to really engage and groove.

Do they not love you? Why ask/tell us? Why should we care?

Personally, I don't agree with that. It's a cover. Unless you're paid to cover things faithfully, nothing wrong with putting your own band's spin on it. A French Horn solo in Enter Sandman might be awesome. It all depends on the player.

Sax on Dream On sounds amazing here.

To jump back to the White Stripes, most of them are just simple blues progressions at heart, but this kid plays some underrated, uncomplicated parts that elevate the song.

My last band was a classic hard rock, classic metal band. They wanted to do " I kissed a Girl" because a chick that came to the shows occasionally, wanted us to play it. Ridiculous.

I played a (very good paying) gig once, with a drummer who had big opinions. There were a few songs he didn't like enough to the point that he sat them out completely.

This gig sucked big time regardless of the good pay. Almost entirely because of the drummer's attitude.

I guess I'm pleading with you to not be that guy. Be there, with a good attitude of happiness and making your bandmates sound their best. Or don't. But don't do the in-between stuff.

I can think of several White Stripes songs by name as well as one that has become an anthem at sporting events around the world, but I could not name a single Joe Satriani song.

Take this as an opportunity to find a supportive part that adds to the sonic palette.

Keyboardists, backup singers, and horns are the only people that get to stand there and sort through their music during a song with no keys, BGVs, or horn parts. I keed.

If you do sit it out, please at least leave the stage.

Perfect opportunity to add a killer bassline of your own! That said, while I'm not a huge fan of Jack taking extended solos(as you said, he ain't exactly Satriani when it comes to technical prowess), the dude writes some good guitar driven pop/Americana songs. Or at least I and a few million other folks think so. I get it though, there are certain songs that I cringe every time they are in a set list myself. I think I feel about Jimmy Buffett the same way you feel about Jack White.

I have heard Dirty Loops make a Brittney Spears song awesome. Just play it better than the original. I agree the White Stripes kind of suck as musicians and should be called "The Skid Marks" because their music is crap. But they did make some money off that crap. If you can cash in on it as well I would just grin and bear it.

I like the white stripes and most of Jack White's other projects.
But i also like coors light -sometimes i put the two together! It could break the mind of people with taste!
