Tool tone/FX sticky thread ver. 1

The more I listen to Pneuma I swear I hear a reverb on some parts. It's so hard to tell and it's probably just the delay. Justin's parts are a little understated on this album but like always the subtleties and variations make his lines much more complex than they seem at first.

Toolbassplayer just put his video up for Pneuma.
No reverb, but plenty of delay and a bit with some chorus at the end.
I still hear a whammy like tone on the intro around 50 seconds, and i don't think it's Adam. Brad does not play during that part in the video though.

you guessing 2 more + volume, or volume and another? I'm still wondering what it is @ 13:58 of 7emptest. Sounds like reverb to me, which would be a new one.

PS, i'm going to be going to several shows on this tour. In fact, i need to get my passport renewed ;). Plan to bring some binocs and hopefully get some insight into any pedalboard changes.

I agree, it sounds like a reverb to me. Though, I've been fooled by a short delay before.
EQD Afterneath wouldn't surprise me (Joe Barresi raved about it)

Anyone in the UK? I think this magazine comes out this week. Hoping for some good nuggets, being the cover story and all.

I just purchased the digital edition of this magazine and it was just about the best $2.99 I have spent. So many of the things we have been conjecturing over the past few months are now answered. I dont wanna put out any spoilers quite yet, but we now know all the effects used on the Invincible solo, which basses were used on the new album (it's more than just the Wal and Stingray!) and what that mysterious red pedal was in the studio video from a year ago and more.

Little birdy told me something about an 8 string a few months back....any mention?

A 12 string is mentioned. Not sure where it was used though, as that was not covered. I was surprised to find that the Wal was used on a bunch of descending though and that the Wal was not used on part of Culling voices... and either was the Stingray!

There is still a little mystery as to any other pedalboard changes. Justin emailed his gear list to the magazine and I've found that hes not one for the details. Quite a few missing on the list we know are 100% on the board. And details missing. All Boss pedals are categorized as just "Boss". Good old Tool, always keeping it close to the vest.

I just downloaded. Thanks!!

Maybe I should give it another listen. My initial impression was that Justin Chancellor seemed to take a back seat to Adam Jones and Danny Carey on the new album.

That's addressed in this article

I didn't really feel that. If anything I felt Adam def stepped up a bit into the forefront. But really, it's a mellower Tool. In a lot of ways. JC is always there still, very prominent in some ways, but def subdued in others. I guess it's just a more refined, aged Tool. Like wine, ya know. I can't wait to read the new article! Thanks for sharing that @jimmy462

I didn't read the article but "Culling Voices" sounds like a passive bass. His '63 P Bass, perhaps?

Yep. Idk now you heard that (in the recording). I guess I wasn’t listening in the right format. In that I only sorta listened through my phone haha so that answers that. But yeah, that’s the one song he said he used it on. And it was only for the verses or intro or something like that. Still sounded like JC to me thru and thru. I’ll have to give it another listen through a good system.

I know this sounds weird (and it is a reason why some companies used to use me in R&D in the past) but I can actually spot instruments by sound in recordings. I knew for a fact that that was a P bass.

spoiler alert?

spoilers:
My magazine came in the mail yesterday, i got to read it today. He's kind of general about his gear. but in summary says its pretty much the same old same old, with the addition of the p bass and music man. it said the music man used two 12 volt batteries to get some extra head room, i didn't even really know about 12 volt batteries. He also mentioned a Providence delay that let him lock its tempo to the digitally mapped tempo track from Danny's drums. Danny went OG with no click, so i doubt the pedal will be a live addition, just dialed specific for the recording process. he said it was especially used/useful for Pneuma as the tempo goes up and down.
I would like to see the picture of the "mysterious red pedal" though.

No answers on the end of 7empest, he did say he was heavily responsible for Mockingbeat though.
In reference to him sitting back more, he said some parts he'd write, then Adam would play and his silence would make for more dramatic effect when he did come it.

He said the Warwick sounded completely different than the Wal, but hes still working on it, but not as a signature instrument or anything.

Apparently a JC signature fuzz wah is in the works with Dunlop though - which was one of the most exciting things about this article for me.

extra: the Guyatone BR-2 got a name drop lol
