Tool tone/FX sticky thread ver. 1

Wouldn't it be phat if tech 21 made a Justin Chancellor DI preamp that incorporated his rat tone and GK 2001? I have always dreamed of that! I get goose bumps just thinking of it!

Indeed. I actually have the GK Plex on my GAS list due to that, it does have OD built in and a "voicing" for the 800RB.

But Tech 21 making a signature pedal and dropping it for $200 would be pretty awesome

Good news everyone. The band I reached out to decided to bring me in for an audition or at the very least jam regularly. They've also changed to doing originals, but the demos they've sent me sound very Tool influenced, so I'm happy to contribute. The band leader is also very serious and the bands practice spaces has an amp and cab set up already.

As of now, I have a chorus and overdrive (Darkglass Vintage Microtubes). I recently picked up a Voodoo Labs 5, so I have some more room on pedal board. Do you guys have any suggestions for what I should add to my board?

If it’s original and not just tool exactly... ive probably got dirt of some description ( I like options but I guess one decent overdrive works ), chorus, reverb and occasional wah use.

IMO, some of the most essential effects for a JC sound is delay, flanger and chorus, whammy, trem, an OD, a dist and a fuzz. I would say wah too but I guess it’s not super essential. You can use a tone or volume control on your bass for wah type sounds if you get good with it. That’s how I ended up seeing it. And an EQ helps too. I use preamps To get the sounds I want. Which are somewhat JC inspired.

Which preamp(s) do you use on your board? Also, recommendations for a good delay pedal? I have about $120 - 150 that I can invest in one.

well I used the darkglass B7KU for years with a rusty box. I swapped the B7K out for a TC Spectradrive. It ended letting more natural tone and a more transparent EQ come through.

As far as a delay, I’d just keep it simple, boss DD3 or a DD7. That’s a no brainer imo. He used a DD7 for years I believe.

I use a Mesa Subway+ Bass DI Preamp. Justin uses Mesa heads so that should get you in the ballpark.

As for delay, he uses a Boss DD-3 and DD-7. I use the latter because it can do everything the DD-3 can and then some. I found mine in like new condition for $125 shipped on Reverb; lots going for around that price right now.

He did bring in an extra Boss Delay for a few shows (where his Foxx used to be)...then moved it...now in place is his sig wah/fuzz. There is a third delay too, but by Providence.

Stoked im going to be able to have 3 different Rat settings to mirror the dirt difference over the last 3 albums. Will use the far right Rat for Aenima/Lateralus songs. Middle for 10,000 and my new Rat for F.I (all 3 have been modded by different companies)

Hey Dean, just joined your new FB group yesterday!

As far as the rats go.. I'm interested in the Kinnatone. With the clean blend would you be able to forgo the EQ pedal after it?

Also, what do you perceive the differences in dirt to be between the 3 eras you describe? Obviously 10,000 days has the most dirt, but how does FI compare to Aenima/Lateralus?
