Tool tone/FX sticky thread ver. 1

Hey Dean, just joined your new FB group yesterday!

As far as the rats go.. I'm interested in the Kinnatone. With the clean blend would you be able to forgo the EQ pedal after it?

Also, what do you perceive the differences in dirt to be between the 3 eras you describe? Obviously 10,000 days has the most dirt, but how does FI compare to Aenima/Lateralus?

Hmmm...not sure about the EQ. I will try it today and turn it off to see what kind of difference there is. If you have a preamp with "eq" type of adjustments on it, you may be able to get away with it.
Def more clean (raw Wal) in the new album, compared to a song like Jimmy.....where Aenima has more bottom end, with more dirt than F.I but not as heavy as 10,000 Days.
I did the mistake in raising my bridge pup for this Pneuma video I did. So a bit of clank on E string when I got aggressive.....will be getting rid of that.

I say get one....Brian does awesome work, and I will be using him for all other pedals (non Tool related) in the future
Recording Fear next and wait until you hear this thing on that song....yumm. It's basically every Rat I have tried, in one enclosure. The clipping options really step up this pedal.

It looks awesome! I currently have a Sansamp YYZ pedal in the grit spot, which has eq built into it. It's a fantastic pedal but there are a few things i don't live about it which is why i'm looking into this rat, but i don't have the space or really want to add another EQ pedal if it still requires it.

Nice. Im actually interested in that pedal myself, hows it working for you?

The YYZ is the best pedal i have found for JC light grit so far, and i have tried them all. (Except for an actual modded rat WITH a blend, hence the discussion with Toolmybass!). My only issues are a few other dirt and modulation pedals that i own that it doesn't really play nice with, anywhere in the chain.

Thanks for the info! Can't wait to hear about the rat/eq verdict

Sorry i didnt reply to this yesterday...got side tracked.
So, if you had a good pre with a blend pot and eq options, you should be able to get away without having the Boss.
Rats are BEASTS...i dont even have the distortion on 1...
Back in the day, i tried every stock Rat, but the very first one they released, and they were all too loud and VERY Tin sounding up the middle. So thats why you see the bandwidth heavily scooped on the Boss.
In trying all those pedals, i figured that Justin's Rat is modded.

Thanks for the reply! I tried many rats back in the day and a bunch of other light OD options along the way including several of the clones. I'm curious to try one again now that Kinnatone seems to have made some pretty big advances with it. I don't have a pre though, just straight into a GK1001RBII. If i have to pair it with an eq and it beats the YYZ in a shootout, then so be it. If not, i'm still mostly happy with the YYZ for now.

Hey guys i don't think i have posted here but read thread alot lol. I enjoy trying to find a good JC tone including effects for fun. I have not bought any of the pedals that he uses though but enjoy flexible pedals that can pull off the moves he makes. I am happy with the Darkglass Alpha Omega for grit with tool songs. It has a more of a fuzz origin than most dirt pedals. I use the eventide H9 to get the whammy stuff and/or alot of other effects but also have a source audio pedal for phase/flange/chorus if needed (h9 is better at it). Source Audio Nemesis for delay is incredible.

I currently have a Mosky Black Rat for fuzz and for $30 is an absolute monster!

The biggest step towards success that i have had recently was the addition of the KMA tyler. This pedal splits the signal into low and high and has separate chains for each freq split. This is perfect for getting close to the dual rig of JC. I run all dirt, fuzz and some effects through the high and keep the low clean and compressed. What it ends up doing is cleaning up the overall sound by getting rid of the mud in the bass and lo-mids which is probably why JC runs the two rigs like he does. Anyway fun bit of kit.

Next biggest step is a real Wal lol..still got a few years before mine is ready but i do have my homebuilt Walwannabe which is multicoil and filter pre just like a Wal..

Anyway good fun

Thanks for your feedback, and the 4 other owners of a Brown Acid (last page). I will certainly get one to make my opinion, but indeed seems rather cool judging by the great sounding demos on YT. Plus, just received a batch of flat patch cables, the "top jacks" arguement isn't that strong anymore...
Just received the MXR Brown Acid this week-end and indeed it retains lows as if it had a clean blend inside (?) and fuzz sounds great, in a compact box. Would love to compare to JHS Bender or original Coloursound TB but really satisfied. Thank you all for this suggestion !

Nice ! I just got a brown acid fuzz a few days ago as well! Agree it sounds awesome and retains low end quite well.

I demo'ed a Brown Acid a while back and put it up against my Coloursound TB (Same one JC has). The Brown Acid was nice and it was close, but for me it was missing a little something that i've never heard in another fuzz that the TB has. The Coloursound is the most crushing fuzz i've ever played. I didn't find the Brown Acid to retain any more bottom end than the TB, and the way i have my TB set i don't experience much low end loss anyway.

I recently got a Rattler (the bass version) from JAM pedals for my grit, taking the RAT spot. It was expensive for sure, but it's absolutely perfect for TOOL. I don't actually use the blend knob because I blend the signals elsewhere in my chain, but it's nice to have it.

The Rattler is seriously awesome. Warm, dynamically responsive light distortion, chewy medium grit, and the high gain stage really screams when you dig in. I don't use any fuzz because of that second gain stage.
