Check out Fatal Tragedy.. I think John pat. is one of the best guitarist ever... John Myung is an awesome bassist.. crazy ass tapper... Portnoy..well me being a drummer.. DAMN! lol Portnoy is god... really he is.. hes crazy
so ill say dt!

my bet is that people voting for tool havent even heard DT *like frankencow*... or die hard fans (which im cool with, but you shouldn't vote if you havent heard both sides)

I have listened to a couple of records whith DT and they're great musicians but i think their music is quite tasteless, to much showoff (is that what people mean by cheesy?).
I don't know which band is technically the best but I think Tool do alot more interesting music and who can compete against Maynards voice? They're by the way my biggest influence at the moment (next to Zappa).

I like Tool but I voted for DT being that they are one of my favorite bands. These bands, IMO, represent different genre's of music so it's a bit of a strange comparison to me. I personally would pick Spock's Beard over either of the two.

I didn't see Tool last time they came around and I'm still kicking myself. These two bands truly are among my top favorites of all time.

both bands are great. dream theater is a bit cheesy with their whole stereotypical metal thing going on. They are great musicians though with mind boggeling chops. Tool are also great musicians but in a different way, i would call them more songwriters. Also i love maynards lyrics, the way the delve deeper. They have more depth to them than most bands do, they really make you question and think... i would say that is one of my main attractions to the band. (plus maynards voice rules!)

lets compare..

Adam is a boring player.
Maynards singing is annoying.
Chancellor is over rated and not that great.
Danny is the only one in the band who i like.

Petrucci is just bad ass, his solos, his songs..
James.. now i don't particularly like him though, his voice is good, im just not too into him.
Myung is one of the best players in the world.
Portnoy is great, but tends to over play.
Keyboard player sucks ass, his sounds are horrid and i just hate nasty, fast , ugly keyboard solos.
Shrenian was ALOT better than the new guy.

Tool is listenable.
Dream Theater makes me want to play.

I picked Dream Theater.

I think that Racer X, Fates Warning and Symphony X are better than tool also. Paul Gilbert is great.

The Mirror is great too... so is Erotomania, that one is fuuuuuuuuuuuuun to play.

techincally there/s no competition, dream theater win 100 to -10.

for songwriting (lyrically) i never trancsript Tool, so i can't say nothing...sorry

For the rest (uses of effects included)it's only a metter of points of view, who can say if it's better Leonardo or Picasso?!

peronally i'll vote for dream theater...

Give me Tool or give me death! :D

Tool...amazing vocals and lyrics, amazing drums, cool riffs in odd time sigs, interesting bass technique...what's not to love?

Dream Theater...annoying vocals (technically good...but annoying), cheesy lyrics, amazing drums, boring riffs in odd time sigs, inaudible bass, excessive guitar masturbation...Tool wins this one hands down (for me, anyways)
