I got some Tool and I got some Dream Theater.
I dig DT a lil' bit more then I can dig tool. I only have 1 DT album "Falling Into Infinity", and I have 2 Tool albums, and I still like DT over them.
So, my vote is for DT :D

This is truly an apples and oranges. I voted for Dream Theater as far as personal preference, but Tool is very cool with what they do.

Just a question to pose.....

Alot of folks here have said that they do not Dream Theater because of James Labrie's voice, that it is just annoying. Now, he really has a classically trained, operatic kind of voice. So does Geoff Tate, Bruce Dickenson, and Rob Halford. So do the same people that dislike Dream Theater here also dislike Queensryche, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest for the same reason?

Just curious.......

Which band do I like more? Tool.

Which band is better ? Now that's a different story.

To borrow a phrase, I feel that Tool is better at being Tool than DT are at being DT. Or, the members of Dream Theater get in the way of the music too much.

Ok that used up my rational thought for the day. . .so in response to one of the earlier posts - WHAT? Danny is soooo much better than Portnoy!

:D

Tol by far. Besides the great use of effects by Jutin he also carries many songs that you which you don't hear everywhere else. And along with Adam using extremely interesing riffs to go along side you can't beat that. And who can beat Danny. Although Portnoy is very talented he tends to showoff which side tracks the whole band anyway. Danny uses a mirage of tribal beats that no one else uses. And let it be known that maynard will go down in history as one of the best vocalists ever. He uses his own voice as his own instrument adding much depth to their songs. This is prety obvious if you heard Mer de Noms. Tool all the way.

I'd say time will tell. Historically, shredders fade away and no one remembers them (or wants to), bands with real substance tend to be remembered for a long time. Lessee: about the same time period... Mr. Big vs. Nirvana. Ten years gone, Nirvana still revered... who will admit to listening to Mr. Big recently? I think it's a massive understatement to say that technically Mr. Big were a bit better than Nirvana :p. But who made a more lasting impact? I expect that Tool will have a more lasting impact than Dream Theater. I could be wrong, of course.
:D Plus Carey kicks Portnoy's butt behind the kit.

ALthough Tool have the greatest videos, and they sound very unique, I am going to ahve to go with Dream Theater, just because they are more talented than tool.... I just havent heard Tool do the stuff Dream Theater can... sure they play in weird times jsut as Dream THeater does, but they dont play Enough of it... its like they stick to 4/4, 3/4, and 6/8. Only have i heard 14/16, or 9/16 come from Dream Theater, so thats where I put my vote and why.

How did I subscribe to this silly thread? It's been so long. . .

I've heard just about every meter with a numerator less than 30 from Tool. Or looking at it another way, plenty of funky stuff such as: 6+7+6+9 (Undertow), 7+8 (Ticks and Leeches), 6+7 (Flood), 7+8+9 (Lateralus), 6 vs. 5 (Lateralus), and so on.

For me it's without a doubt Dream Theater. Although Tool is pretty cool (and most members of D.T. seem to be pretty big fans of Tool) I just like the D.T. style songwriting a lot better. Anyway IMO this poll is very extremely useless, it's all just a matter of taste. Dream Theater and Tool are two completely different bands. To compare D.T. with for instance Fates Warning or Pain Of Salvation would make a little bit more sense (still not very much though....)

I dislike them both.. Where's the carrots option?!

Julien, I was just coming to that point :D

OTOH, am I somekind of freak as almost everyone seems to love either tool or DT?

Just hand me one of them Blues Traveller, AC/DC or Motörhead cds..

................TOOL................

If you're into progressive hair metal bands,, with a lot of flash and less substance,, you will like DT better. Add James Labries screeching weasel vocals and for me the choice is obvious.

OH by the way I really like DT anyways,, i have several of their cds, including the first from 1989 with Charles Domininci on vocals,, IMO he's got a better voice,, he just uses it a little wierdly.

James Labrie IS NOT nearly as good of a vocalist/songwriter as Maynard,, its like comparing a middle school singer with a B- average to a member of the salt lake city tabernacle choir.

John Myung IS better than Justin Chancellor,, as far as technical playing ability,, but his tone sucks as far as I'm concerned. I think Justin fits the band perfectly and comes up with some real cool stuff too. Not HARD stuff necissarily,, but interesting none the less. (NOTE,, I would rather listen to a John Myung solo than a Justin Chancellor solo,, but this is about bands)

John Petrucci IS technically better than Adam Jones as far as speed,, speed and speed,, BUT Adam comes up with some EXTREMELY trippy lines,, and his guitar playing really connects with me more than hammer ons/pull off/ 9/16 tapping ala John Petrucci.

Mike Portnoy IS NOT as good of a drummer as Danny Carey,, some people have said "but DT went to Berklee" so what does that prove? Danny has played drums since he was 13,, attended music school as well,, and plays extremely TASTEFULLY,, something i have yet to see Portnoy do. He can also go off the handle better than Portnoy,, listen to Undertow,, AEnima or Lateralus,, you will hear some crazy stuff. He's a lot more epic in his style,, you can tell the fury is building during a bridge part or something,, only to be released ala the Grudge off Lateralus. (I would DEFINATELY rather listen to danny over mike)

I would say to all of you that haven't voted yet,, DON'T unless you have listened to each band extensively.

While Dream Theater may have more "classical" music training than Tool over all,, and their guitar and bass players are definately a lot faster,,,.... IMO that doesnt make them better.

However,,

Decide for yourself who you like better.

lets compare..

Adam is a boring player.
Maynards singing is annoying.
Chancellor is over rated and not that great.
Danny is the only one in the band who i like.

Petrucci is just bad ass, his solos, his songs..
James.. now i don't particularly like him though, his voice is good, im just not too into him.
Myung is one of the best players in the world.
Portnoy is great, but tends to over play.
Keyboard player sucks ass, his sounds are horrid and i just hate nasty, fast , ugly keyboard solos.
Shrenian was ALOT better than the new guy.

Lets see.. I think this post is VERY biased and immature... lets disect your post shall we?

"Adam is a boring player."
You don't really pay attention to tool do you. If you really listen to Tool, the Guitar and the Bass compliment eachother. Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor take turns being the rhythm and lead. I think its great that each instrument doesn't hog eachother.
How can you say Adam is boring? I think his solos are great... it has more feeling then Petrucci.. Im sorry to say this to you but Petrucci just busts his chops and thats it.. Just because you shred on guitar doesn't mean your a great guitar.. i must give Petrucci respect that he's a great guitar player. Just because Jones doesn't "Rip it up" on guitar, doesn't necessarly make him a horrible player. From how you say he's a boring player, your just in it for the "chops" and not appreciate the more simple things. Simple solos are great as well. thats how i see it.

Maynard's singing is annoying
You think Maynard's singing is annoying? I think James from DT's singing is alot more annoying to me. I think Maynard is a great singer, he can do any style of singing, screaming. He knows when to pull back and come in strong.

Chancellor is over rated and not that great
See comments above (For the Adam Jones one) same thing fits here.

Danny is the only one in the band who i like.
Why cuz he's the only one that shows chops?

Now moving on to the DT comment

Keyboard player sucks ass, his sounds are horrid and i just hate nasty, fast , ugly keyboard solos.
Shrenian was ALOT better than the new guy.

Jordan Rudess(SP?) is a fantastic pianist/keyboardist.. He's originally a classic piano player.. listen to his other stuffs off DT.. How can you say someone sucks ass when they totally rip you up in pieces when it comes to keyboard/piano? His Keyboard solos are great. You don't have an open mind when it comes to Soloing. Listen to other types of music with soloing first to appreciate his solos more. Don't comment anyone saying they suck ass. Especially when they can literally kill you on that instrument and probably in music generally.

Conclusion
Just because a band doesn't shred and have unspiring ripping up solos, doesn't mean they are a better band. If you listen to DT's stuff, it doesn't give you the same feeling as to Tool.. Tool makes me feel something inside. I personally don't really like Petrucci hogging up solos. his solos do kinda get repetitive after awhile. Myung's tone is definitely not great. You are probably in to the more "LETS SHOW OFF" kind of bands. Which DT will fit fine for you. I really like DT but I must say I like Tool a lot more for listening many times. DT just gets repetitive and no feeling.

Just be a little more mature before you posts these msgs
