being totally honest... I blow my guitarist away on the 1 song we switch for every night. I own that instrument. But I'm a very very average bass player. I practice, but my right hand just doesn't have any attack. I think I'm going to return to the pick for most songs. I played using pick the other night, and they didn't notice the pick, but they went crazy over how much stronger i was.
I think tone is everything.
Great players who get great tone as pick players include: McCartney (I'm amazed he can achieve such a bassy tone on some of the songs where he's playing with a pick), Carol Kaye, who has played on so many hits, Sting, Squire, Roger Glover, and the list goes on.
On the international stage, famous pick players are arguably just as well-known, or even better known than their famous finger-style counterparts.
If a player can achieve smoothness and a tone they want (and that is agreeable with the rest of the band), they should stick with a pick. Or even better, achieve proficiency with finger-style and slap, too! More weapons in the arsenal.
