Tort guard hate?

I tort English for a while after college

I had one of those CIJ Mustangs, and it is the look! My only thought, at the time, was that the tort was very dark and didn't have any movement to it. If you look at '60s Mustangs (and P basses) the tort on them was often lighter, and had a bit more depth/swirl/movement to the pattern.

Yeah, I thought the same thing but I’m just going to keep this one original except for the flats I put on it. I assume flats are what would have been used on it anyway.

I actually don't like pickguards at all. I typically consider them a no-fly zone. I've probably missed out on a lot of great guitars because I won't usually even pick up one if it has a pickguard. Because of that, I have no opinion of tort pickguards.

Took me a while before I got an affinity for it, but when I bought an Affinity P (Baltic blue, RW board) that had a busted single ply white guard I thought a nice tortoise guard would go well with the RW neck.

Looked around and found a very nice one that is somewhat reddish. Been a convert ever since.

Now mother of toilet seat on the other hand...

Apologies if this has been covered ad naseum here, but I’m new to the fold and lazy about searching, so here goes: why all the tort guard hate? Personally, I’ve always been a huge fan of tort guards; probably my favorite guard option. Am I in the minority? Lay it on me, TalkBass, what say y’all?
