I said I'd never get a bass with tort till I recently found a 1960 P bass that's otherwise trashed but has its original pickguard. For $400 I couldn't say no, and it DOES look nice on that ancient beast.

So, that's my one tort pickguard, and I like it, but I'm not getting any others. Haha

I think it's because it is definitely tied to an era (one decades before I was born, even) in my mind, so new basses with tort don't jibe in my head. But old ones certainly do.

I really don't know who the OP is talking about with regard to hating tort.
My guess is that if he put together a poll asking to choose one of the following;

I love tort
I hate tort
Depends on the bass
I really don't care one way or another
Carrots

He would likely find that there might be a few who hate tort but the vast majority would choose an answer other than hate.

It's funny...

In the late 70's, as pre and early teenager, I hated them, as well as sunbursts, maybe because most cheap copies seemed to have both.

In 2018, at 52, I really think both look great, even together.

Tastes change!

My story is similar, but a little different.

As a teenager in the 70s, many of the Fender guitars and basses on TV musical shows were sunburst/rosewood with tort guards. When I went to Sam Ash, many of the Fenders there were also sunburst/rosewood with tort guards.

Maybe, I like this color combo, because it was ubiquitous as I was growing up or maybe because it's an earthy color combo that I like. I like reds, browns and blacks. Show me terra cotta, and I'll follow you anywhere! :woot:

So, you liked the close up of my G&L ASAT Tribute Special?

Here's the full guitar.

Also, pretty models from the Czech Republic tend to go for tort guards.

Mike ;)
