Tort guard hate?

I like darker, browner tort. It's the old really red/orange stuff that just clashes with pretty much any body color IMO. The absolute worst is tort on red. Barf!

For example, I like the tort on my AV '64 RI Jazz Bass, but I don't like the tort on a real '64 Jazz Bass.
Agreed, darker, browner tort is near the top of desirability. Blatant redish tort can look plasticy and cheapen the over all look. In those cases I may consider black.

Apologies if this ha
I think you have the wrong bass forum. I'd say that TB is pro tort. For me it depends. I love the look of a black jazz bass with a maple neck and a tort pickguard. Any other combination...not so much.

A quality, non pepperoni tort guard looks cool. What does not look cool is pearloid. Why all the pearloid hate? Hard to say. The real question is why am I asking myself questions? Again, hard to say.

Has tort loaf been brought into this thread? For those who are on the fence about tort or even for outright haters, tort loaf should bring them around.

Seriously, in the Talman Bass Club there is so much discussion on tort guard removal, refinishing, refurbishing, and purchasing... before the bass is even bought!!;) I modded mine myself about three days in to having it, and it looks like a preschooler did it, which is fine; at least it ain't tort...:)
