I weather them using various paints, chalks and color washes. Many of the models are built up from parts to represent the specific car, I paint and decal them as they looked in about 1976.
They are works of art!

.... the flat itself was available as a starting point, the end bulkheads were built up from styrene structural shapes and some parts, painted, weathered etc. 
This is almost entirely scratch built from styrene shapes.

Nice. Very realistic looking set. I live near a main freight line and most cars now are containers and garbage cars. There is also a lot of graffiti from some very talented artists.
I am old enough to remember the cabooses and circus trains. Now they put an engine in the middle of the string and sometimes on the end for better control.
