Traben Club, Level 2.

I am posting my NBD here because after searching I found this club. I traded for a Traben AR4 (Array?) and I am in love with it. Could someone please provide some further specs on this. And debate with me on what type of wood this is? Thanks! These sound killer and are clearly underrated for the price range. About to load up the big iron Ampeg and test my neighbors.

AP4 is Array Premium. I think it's basswood with the flame maple top. I had the same one but the preamp on mine killed batteries whether I used it or not. Stock generic pickups but they sound pretty good. That bass and an Array 5 I had both set up super super low action. Made in Korea before the Hanser ownership.

Nice one ! I tried really hard to find specs on Trabens, nobody seems to know much about these. At least yours isn't painted, so we can confirm the woods, looks indeed like basswood, definitely maple top, and the neck is made of maple and I don't know what, maybe mahogany ?

A person in Springfield, MO is looking for info about where his Traben was manufactured. Serial # T04602. A potential buyer is requesting if that was a Korean made axe as he doesn't want one from Vietnam. Thanks for listening

So after the last 4 years of regretting getting rid of my Trabens, I replaced my grail! An Array NT, T serial number.
Currently it's torn apart for some repair. Like alot of older trabens the bridge has serious peeling. So I've got it soaking in bleach to strip it and then I'll sand and polish it to a nice shine. I'm replacing all the screws, since most are rusted. But other than the cosmetic stuff, the body is incredibly gorgeous! No chipping, buckle rash, or cracking. I'm REALLY happy!

So why is this thread not busier! Trying to find a used Traben is pretty much a non-option and when you do see one, it's gone quick!

I agree I was surprised when I traded for mine that this thread was not busier. I love my AP4 but I have considered selling it. Not sure why because it checks almost all of my boxes. Korea, Light, Long scale, Active Passive, Spalted Maple. I would like to see more of them, they are underrated. The bridge can be a turn-off or a turn-on for many.

Bought the greenish Array NT sometime last year (page 22), barely touched it, but finally dropped it off with a bass tech last week to dial er in and sling up some new DR SSs. Should be pretty killer. Then i cheated on my traben collection and got an ehb1505ms.... but still pickin away at the array special and array spalt burst. Might be time to swap some pickups and preamps finally.

How does it sound in passive mode ? I tried bypassing the preamp on my Array because i wanted to make it passive, but I was disapointed by the output level. The pickups sound great, but not loud enough...

They sound pretty amazing to me in passive. I might actually prefer it. Yes it takes some more juice. Add some gain staging with a pedal and in my DAW and it's nice and beefy. The -15DB on amps and pedals comes in handy when switching between the two.

Specifically I use either my Spectre Drive (250mA) or my EH Big Muff Bass with HP and LP

On your model the body wood is royal paulownia with a maple cap

the neck is most likely maple and mahogany with a wenge fret-board...

Hey folks. Here's the short version of a fairly wild story about my Traben, a seemingly rare Chaos 5 in Fire Fade.

I've owned this bass for nearly 14 years now (bought it in May 2007), and until yesterday, had never seen another like it. An author I follow on Twitter had responded to a photo from someone he follows, putting the photo in my feed just in time for me to see a very familiar bass in the background.

I'd been curious about mine before, but never gotten far with research. Seeing another, and talking with its owner, lit the fuse on finally finding some answers. The search brought me here, and so I thought I'd share the rough timeline I compiled for this oddball, along with a few photos.

Traben's old site (via Wayback Machine) was my main source of availability data, so model lifecycle dates are approximate.
  • 02/15/2004 - Chaos 4 page is available, Chaos 5 page is a simple placeholder
  • 03/25/2004 - Traben homepage is first indexed
  • 06/01/2004 - Chaos 5 page is available, listing original finishes: Burnt Orange, Deep Blue, Root Beer
  • 04/03/2005 - Chaos 5 finish options change: Deep Blue removed, Fire Fade added
  • 02/03/2006 - Last Chaos 5 page indexing (This result actually resolves to one from 08/30/2005)
  • 02/09/2006 - Last indexing of Traben's homepage mentioning the Chaos model
  • 04/02/2006 - Chaos model is no longer listed on Traben's homepage
From this, I've inferred that the Chaos 5 was only available in Fire Fade for roughly a year, and together with its serial number (T00111), this leads me to believe that mine was likely among the first produced. An interesting detail: the other's serial number is in the low 700s, which suggests an appreciable jump in Traben's popularity during this time.

An imgur post with screenshots of archived pages, and some photos of T00111 is linked below.

So I completely forgot to list the work I did to it! So the body was absolutely perfect, but every piece of metal was rusted and/or corroded.

So first up, I removed the bridge and soaked it in bleach to remove what was left of the chrome. Then sanded it down with 5 grits of progressively finer sandpaper.

I replaced ALL the screws, including the pickup height screws, electronic cavity cover screws, output jack screws, and the bridge saddle screws and springs.

The tuners were in good working order, but looked a bit used so I replaced with a fresh set of grovers, just to be safe.

And last, the fretboard was filthy. So I scrubbed it. Hit the board and frets with some fine steel wool and reconditioned with lemon oil.

Popped some new dunlop mediums on, placed a proper Autobot logo on the truss rod cover, did a full set-up and it plays like a dream!

So worth the 300$ guitar center sold it for!!
