i just got the chaos obsession 4 today from the perfect bass. havent plugged it in yet but it feels great. a bit on the heavy side but not overwhelmingly so. strung with nickel d-addario's the bass gives off great tone without an amp. gorgeous in person. fretwork is nice. smooth. no burs. seems damn near perfect intonation and was tuned right out of the box. havent found any "dead" spots on the neck. only complaint so far is that of the 5 knobs, the volume knob was positioned to close and pretty much resting on top of the body. easy fix. i'll post some pix soon and then take a number.

Hi All-
I have been looking at the new Chaos Core 5 strings and am interested in purchasing one. I do have some reservations- I cannot find any dealer near me that has one in stock, so I cannot play before I buy. My concern is that with the Aguilar OBP-3 preamp and the pickups, how much money is actually going into the construction/materials of the bass, considering the price point? I'm not really talking about the factory setup, more about the overall quality of the instrument.
Also, I haven't heard too much about the tonal characteristics of this bass. Can you get an agressive, growl type sound from this bass?
Thanks in advance.
Scott C

I have no clue, except this.....................

You're new bass was almost gonna be mine. I recognize the graining in the wood. I had my eye on your bass at TPB for a couple days about a week ago and decided to hold off until I find a buyer for my Geddy Lee Jazz.

Plug it in and get some mileage on those strings. Let us know what you think of it. I can't wait to hear your thoughts.

I'm putting the Geddy in the trader tonight so I hope to get the Traben soon.

well the Traben has AWESOME tone. clean tight and solid. not as powerful and killer as my spector.... but i am not in the least disappointed. i would not and could not put this bass down. i should have a link to audio/video of me fuc*ing off i can post in a day or two. all in all the assessment is; this bass (chaos obsession 4) is in no way a cheap, crap, p.o.s, fuc*tard of a bass. The tone for the price is solid. i only wish it matched volumes with my spector. otherwise. 4.8 out of 5.

Do you think it's just a matter of hot rodding the electronics? Do you think it needs a different preamp to equal the output of your Spector?

Now I'm really excited to get one!

I hope I start getting phone calls for the Geddy soon.

Thanks for the review:bassist:

One question, has your Spector got a tone pump boost only pre?
If so, are they closer in output if the Traben's eq is maxed?

Hmm, correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like the Chaos Obsession has a basic preamp, but the Chaos Core has the Aguilar OBP-3. Is that correct?

You're correct.

I prefer the styling of the Obsession version over the Core but the preamp in the Core is of a higher quality. Too bad Traben doesn't install the Aguilar in the Chaos Obsession.

Ok, gotcha. It is a shame, and I'm a bit surprised that there isn't a larger price difference between the two, considering the Preamp. I guess it may come down to the body woods.

I bet they are still very close in price because the Obsession version is neck-thru while the Core is bolt on.

Looks like it would cost about $130 to buy the Aguilar OBP-3 preamp and swap it in for the stock one.

I've seen scratch and dent Chaos Obsessions sell for $429 and they only have tiny flaws like a ding in the wood the size of a Tic Tac. Add the new preamp and you have a kick ass new bass for about $560. Not a bad way to go.

Yeah, I was hoping that theperfectbass.com might have a scratch and dent chaos core 5 string in scratch and dent, but to no avail. Guess I'll just have to buy a brand new one...

well. i'm talking to a friend of mine who is a pretty solid Dr.Frankenstein for guitars. He is going to take a look and see what he can do. Yet, i bet the better pre-amp would help. I only had a chance to jam through my peavy tko80 practice amp, so when i cranked the eq on the bass it just distorted the 1 15 in the little combo at any decent volume.. gonna hook up my rig in a few minutes and see what she can do side by side with the spector.
