Traynor SB110 and SB112 questions

I’m looking at those right now for a rehearsal and small venue amp.

Questions:

1. Is there a substantial difference in terms of volume produced between the 110 and the 112?

2. Do they handle the low B and high output basses (ex.: G&L L-2500)? Synth and octave pedals?

Of course, I consider plugging a compressor before the amp for safety (and tone), but…

I have the SB112. It's a great little combo amp. I use it mostly for double bass. It should be quite capable for "rehearsals and small venues" ... unless your band plays quite loud.

I believe the SB110 produces 120 watts, while the 12 produces 200 watts. This in itself won't make a significant difference in loudness, but the bigger speaker and headroom will help the 5-string.

A master volume control can only reduce the throughput of the output stage(s), so not having one is like having the master volume set to "10." IMO the master-volume control is useful for guitar amps, not so much for bass.

The only thing that is really different is if you like its gain stage overdriven. You can't turn down.

I tune my 5-strings GCGCF and my SB112 does just fine. I do generally use my Broughton HPF set around 60hz in front of it, but I do that more to keep peace with the neighbors than to protect the speaker. I almost never turn the gain up past 9:00; these things get loud fast.

I’ve noticed they get loud fast. That’s why I’m even considering the SB110, which is slightly less powerful. Still thinking.

I don’t think these really do overdrive on their own. I do also have the SB500H head, which does have separate gain and master controls, and that doesn’t get any significant drive even with the input gain maxed. I use the YYZ for drive with this one, because of course I do, eh?

I have the three Small Block combos. The 110 is potent, the 112 noticeably more so. Traynor tells me they all have built-in high pass filter set at 44Hz.

Do you happen to know the frequency centers for the 4-band EQ, or if you don’t, how to reach Traynor? I would also like to know what kind of wattage the SB500H gets at 8 ohms.

I think I may have seen the eq frequencies somewhere, probably on Traynor’s website, they have downloadable pdf owner’s manuals and technical sheets.

You can email them from the website too, they answered my hpf question within 24 hours.

I would think the SB500 gives the usual 2/3 output of 340 watts with one 8 ohm cabinet.

I don’t recall the manuals getting into specifics, but good to know Traynor actually responds to email inquiries

A bit of a thread tangent I admit, but I play a Traynor sb115 which is amazing on my low B. And the customer service reps have been very responsive with all my questions.

I have a GK MB115 II combo and, frankly, it’s kinda “hissy”; theres a constant “draft”-like noise coming from the speaker when it’s Gain is up to 11 o’clock or more. Then when you engage the tweeter it’s even worse, like a high pitch hum or buzz begins.

Some of it seems to be fan noise - especially when turned up very loud - and while it’s not unbearable - if only ever used to jam with friends in a garage it’s fine - but if a guy ever wanted to use it for recording, forget it!

So my query is how quiet are the Traynors? Do they have issues with hiss or hum? Do the tweeters buzz or are they pretty quiet?

I have the SB200H head, a DIY non tweetered 110 cab, and a serious aversion to fan noise or any other kind for that matter. That rig passes the sniff test easily for me.

My 3 Small Blocks are quiet most of the time. On rare occasions I get electrical buzzing which is fixed by moving the electrical cord.

Speaker hissing has occurred in the past especially with the tweeter on. This went away with use, breaking-in issue I suppose.

I’ll give mine a careful listen at some point today, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard any fan, and while I think I have noticed more hiss with the tweeter engaged there’s not much of it in the first place.
