Tricked Out Squier Club Part 2

i have a warmoth jazz pickguard routed for a precision split coil pickup that has been unused for too long. im debating on turning this guy into a pj and load it up with dimarzio model p and j pickups.

to all you modders, is this possible without a router?

If you have an electric drill, you can drill out most of the area that you'd remove with a router, then use a chisel to clean all the little wood bridges out of the area.

If you use this technique, put a piece of tape on the drill bit so you don't go through the back of the instrument.

Yeah I love mine! I got one for all three of my Dremels - they are different sizes.

But not only as a plunger, they are really nice in that they can be locked in a setting too, so there's a lot of flex to the design.

Here's one for my Dremel Advantage unit:::

If you use a smaller cutter, chances of keeping it in control are a lot better. There will also be less blood.

I've done the drill-and-chisel method as well as just using a router. The drill & chisel works, and it's reeal ugly, but the pickguard does hide your sins. If you've got a Dremel though, I'd consider getting the router attachment and a bit and doing it that way, I'll be cleaner and ultimately easier.

Plus I bet you'll find a dozen other uses for a router bit having one around.

Hey Gord - I noticed that the URL you posted for that plunger unit, show it as mostly plastic.

I MIGHT be a little more reserved about thinking it is 'terrific' - 'good', maybe - but 'great' might be pushing the envelop a lot.

Fortunately I got mine in metal - aluminum mostly.

i probably will need a new dremel anyway, the two i have are a bit older. for the price i might be able to pick up a palm router at a pawn shop or at a hardware store on sale. the bass plays decent as is, i have just been wanting a pj for awhile now. im almost thinking modding it would ruin how balanced it is.

The pickups are acceptable? My guess is for that price you're getting a body, pg, and bridge--maybe, but you'll have to replace electrical components & possibly the bridge.

Don't take my comment as an endorsement of the pups AT ALL. I haven't assembled the body to playing condition. Fact of the matter is this body is going to be my testing body for different choices I may want to putz with. I have no intent to use the supplied electrics at all.

Just get a piece of black pickguard material and cut your own. Great lookin bass.

You got me thinking--two of those chrome humbuckers in a Modern Player Jazz. I wonder if they'll fit & how that would sound & look.

I already had the 50's, but wasn't enthused about the tone. So this was a cheap way to try that. The only problem I've got with the modern player is the pup spacing as I play on the middle pickup.
I'm thinking about one though, maybe a ramp in the middle??

The MPJ feels great but I didnt like the pickups for the hour I played them. Maybe another try or louder or a different room. It's a bad feeling when you play a bass but no amount of adjusting knobs can get you to arrive at your tone. that's why I'm asking so many questions.
I'm hoping a Squier is an affordable solution.

Another thing I'm considering instead of the MP telecaster is a squier VM telecaster. Add the bridge pup, and you have basically the same thing, prolly made at the same place for about half the bones. Plus some fun
