There was a guy years ago on ebay selling them for around $125 a set. He would by new '70's style Fender (but no Fender stamped on the plates) tuners and grind the top bumps off and do a great polishing/buffing job to make the edges super smooth/clean. You would never know they had been altered from near or far. I think you can still buy those '70's RI tuners, maybe even w/Fender stamped on them. I have another set on my J, and a set of actual '66 Mustang short-stem pops on my custom Tele fretless build. I don't care for the Hipshot pops because of their unauthentic chunky worm-gear blocks.
Cool basses JIO, but even cooler info on the POPs! Many thanks for those gems of info. Pops are my favourite tuner by far. I may still get Hipshots for my Jags, just to reduce the weight and only I, myself, will have to look at the worm-gears (my kitties haven't had any opportunities to go outside the house yet). I'm copying and pasting the PoP culture into my bass projects file for future reference. Again, many thanks for the 411.

thanks FF - I failed to consider the newer Hipshot pops w/small light gears while talking comparisons. Functionally they are a better design being lighter and still looking good from the front. Like I said, I get fussy about details and want it in 360 degrees, and as a long-term T-bird owner, neck-dive is mostly overstated in my opinion. (I have a '64 and a Fenderbird and I've never had an issue w/it)
The decal is very nice quality but unfortunately they only do the Jaguar guitar version (2 separate styles even) of which this is the early version. Invalid Link Removed
I wasn't paying attention at first and i thought; "what's tricked out on that VM 70?" then i realised it wasn't 2 seperate basses. Nice colour. i like that. the pickguard is not my cup of tea however. But still respect.
How is that spacing for the knobs working out for you? looks a little tight and uneven. No hate, just saying
The PG was kinda a necessary evil. The knobs look uneven in the pic, but they actually aren`t, and the spacing works out fine. Love it !

My 2010 VM Squier fretless jazz with Seymour Duncan quarter pounder pickups, Wilkinson vintage tuners topside thumbrest and a self made '62 style head decal.
Just put some black jazz cooker knobs on it too, so it's nice and wrong!
How do you like the 1/4 pounders over the stock "D" Designed? Also...I like what you did with the decal,,thats cool.
The QP's have really pulled the bass together in my opinion. The DD's were well balanced but weak, even raised up high. The QP's are loud and fat and really woody, especially off the fretless board. I haven't got the neck perfect yet, I keep fiddling with the bridge and truss rod... it's very nearly there but maybe the build quality is limited. My playing certainly is

A Tele Deluxe has a Strat style headstock so this would have to be a Telecaster Custom Deluxe HH Bass!
Hey guy's. So I sold my Millennium and bought a squier affinity jazz V to trick out. i got lucky and received one with good fret work ( no sprouting or high frets ).
First I bought an Audere preamp on the classified, the oem pickups are really noisy so I bought a set of Bartolini 57J1 L/S
and installed them yesterday I now have a Super J

Guitar Fetish should have you covered. I needed a pretty big sheet myself; it was way more than enough
I'm almost convinced, just have to find a large sheet of pickguard material that apparently seems hard to find.
@BillyB Good thinking about the strat headstock, but I like the neck as it is so I'm not gonna change that
I wasn't suggesting a neck change...I like the tele one better anyway. I was just being too detail oriented...
As pnut166 mentioned while I was typing this post, Guitarfetish has sheets of pickguard material up to approx 29 by 49 cm (11-3/8 by 19-1/4 in.) and they do ship to Europe! Link

I totally dig the concept and especially like the pg, but unless you really want the boomy neck-snugging version, if you leave the center one where it is and position the bridge pu between it and the bridge - you'll have something closer to Leo's other great bass, the G&L L-2000. (or do 3 - it seems to be trending right now!)

This is the result of waiting.., but I've changed my mind about doing the fingerboard in ebony and will instead go w/Indian rosewood. I decided to do a reasonable replica of my favorite neck, the early '66 bound and dotted J. It strays from my P/Jazzuar concept but I realized since I can't afford the real thing, I will be happiest w/a very nice replica.
