Tricked Out Squier Club Part 3

I'll get pics up when it's done, but I'm working on a project I've dubbed "The '89 Maxima."

It's an Affinity P-Bass body I've sanded and will be painting charcoal metallic gray, the first auto color I fell in love with, on an 89 Nissan Maxima (I have weird taste in cars ...). I'm installing quarter-pounders and bolting on a Squier P-Bass Standard (Jazz dimensions) neck, onto which the previous owner put an old-school Fender Precision Bass logo. Black p'guard.

Eventually I plan on replacing the pots (the tone pot just spins since I replaced the 'guard ... common, I think). Maybe the bridge, too--it's a cheapy from Amazon; if it doesn't sustain, then a Fender Vintage or BAII.

And I nearly forgot: I have an 80s or early 90s Squier J that's metamorphosed a few times. After playing it stock through the late 90s, I replaced the neck with a Jazz Bass Special fretless and put a tort 'guard on its black body.

This winter, though, I stripped and stained it, then I bolted a Warmoth 8-string neck and Schaller bridge to it.

I found that I wasn't getting much use out of it as an 8-stringer, so now it has an early 2000's MIM neck on it, and I've replaced the control plate/pots with an Amazon find. I still need to get the neck PUP soldered correctly, but the bridge PUP surprisingly sounds pretty good!

If my folks can locate the original neck (which is in a garage or barn or something at their place), I'll probably try that out and, if it's not FUBAR, get rid of the MIM neck. I'm really curious what the SN was, to know if it's one of those Squiers from the 80s that are so coveted. It sounds pretty darn good, so maybe ...

Here`s another mod I did about a year ago, not sure if I shared it. It was an Affinity that had MAJOR issues when I got it for $30. Numerous dents filled, refinished, new PG, MIM pups / pots swapped in. The neck was horrible. Straightened it out, frets leveled, block stickers. Missing chunk out of headstock filled, veneer cap applied. When I finished it, it was quite nice !

Here's my Squier P. I have active EMG-P's in it, soon replacing them with EMG-PAX's, a pickgaurd I colored myself and a vintage threaded bridge. I use to have a BA II bridge on it but felt like changing if up. I plan to eventually replace the nut with a brass one. She is a beaut, plays and sounds like a dream. It was my first bass as well.

Thanks, that was the vibe I was going for.

For anyone interested in the tech specs here's what it has going on:

-3 Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups
-Individual pickup selectors
-Master Volume w/ Push Pull for Series/Parallel (as long as the middle pickup and any other pickups are on)
-Master Tone
-Active /Passive switch
-Bass Boost
-Treble Boost

Given some of the builds in this thread, I don't feel worthy to post these but here - under halogen lights - is my take on putting more black stuff on a stock maple VM jazz.

I don't remember where I stole the idea for the carbon fiber look vinyl on the control plate but steal it I did.:D I can't get the lighting right in the photo's - but you get the idea.

Next up - Vol/Blend/Tone with push/pull series/parallel and a decision - $$$ - on black tuners - either Hipshot HB7+BT7 (drop in) or ultralights (drill & fill).

Suggestions welcome.:)

I decided while waiting for the early dot & bound '66 replica J neck (later this week it'll be done I'm told) I wanted to get the Jag playable. I took my AllParts ebony-boarded J (love this neck) off of my Jazz bass, mounted it on the Squier VM Jag body and strung it up w/GHS Pressurewounds. I think I just may leave it on this bass, and mount the '66 on my Jazz bass. The satin black body works well w/the ebony board visually and the 70's decals fit the 70's vibe of these basses. Pops 'round-out' the look and after 3-point intonation/tuning, I'm diggin' the P/J combo sonically. (1st P/J for me) I'm hearing that classic meaty P tone up front and w/a bit of J dialed in I'm now understanding why this combination is so popular - it rocks!

I will eventually make it a string-thru, but I wanted to hear it and break it in before more modding. Speaking of which, I needed to drill new bridge holes so the HM aftermarket bridge was positioned correctly (about 1/4" higher/toward the neck) to allow proper intonation range. Once done, perfect.

The bass has a straight-ahead no-nonsense look and a sound to back it up. Until the new neck is done, I'll be rockin' this P in Jag clothing!

Hey guys, I figure I'll join this thread cause I now own two squier basses- a FABULOUS red CV Precision 60s, and a natural VM Jazz V. Got the Jazz today used for $220 and I have to say that these are getting dangerous- once you pop you can't stop. My P has a Dimarzio model P in it and I installed a coil tap/Series Parallel switch in it, so that's modified. Now for future plans that will likely end up here. My plan for the J is to install a fat humbucker in the neck for some deeper tones, and probably an active preamp. I'm also thinking of a 5 way blade selector and having one master volume and a master tone. The P is most likely getting a MM style pickup on its bridge with a stereo out in the near future. Thoughts?

So, this bass is getting some play-time. Essentially my 1st P-bass, and also my 1st Squier. Regardless of it being a Fender or Squier, the body is very resonant and holds notes for a good long time. (rich sustain) Whether the HM bridge has anything to do w/it I can't say. The wood does seem pretty soft, and my planned string-thru mod will help keep the bridge grounded to the body and if it doesn't at least stay the same (sustain etc) I can always go back to bridge-thru. The bass is comfortably light, at least lighter than my most favored mongrel J. No real neck-dive, and a nice wide strap also helps keep it in balance. I'm still getting used to the GHS Pressurewounds - I usually use their Progressives and their flats, and these are definitely different in feel and tone. I do like the black thread though...
