I did try this. The P and the J in series sounded close to P soloed.

Generally speaking, I find that series wiring is the most effective when both pickups are of the same type (two Js, or two coils of a humbucker). More the pickups differ, more one of the two tends to dominate the overall sound...

Thanks, I was thinking that may be the case. Probably won't bother, although this is turning into a good bass for experiments.

Tempted to put some lightweight tuners on it, which would bring it down to 8 and a half pounds or so, but it doesn't need it. It's lightweight and balances nicely as it is.

By any means, try the series wiring if you can, this mod is easy to undo anyways. Maybe it will work better for you!

I'll be more likely to just use it on a Jazz-style bass. I definitely don't feel I'm lacking any tones with the PJ.

The tuners that were on the VM Jazz neck were awful, I don't know what the previous owner/s had done to them, but they wouldn't hold tune, they slipped, rattled, all 4 of them. Swapped out the ones on the PJ neck, and they're infinitely better, despite being identical, as far as I can tell.

Ultralites, or Res-o-Lites, would be a welcome improvement. I'm in no rush because it doesn't need them, same as the pickups, but it'd be a worthwhile long term mod.

It always amazes me how nice a good VM Squier is straight out the box now, especially considering they're less than half the price of a Mexi Standard here.

Mikey Way Mustang converted to a regular 'stang with Nordstrand pickups and Hipshot Ultralights. I added an arm and tummy contour and painted it Plum Crazy!

Almost finished, originally a Squier P Bass special.
Mods so far,CV Jazz neck,(I love vintage frets) and new inlay stickers,
Bill Lawrence P/J pups with new cts pots,jack and oil filled cap,
TI Jazz flats,strap locks.
Still need to fit hipshot D tuner and black pick guard,I loathe the white one.
I just love this bass even if it is alot heavier than the Jazz or P bass.

I added Labella flats, & a Fender Japan bridge pickup & 500K potentiometer for it. Stock pickups are fine; I had an extra pickup so I threw it in. This bass sounds great at 90% vol & 10% tone.

MF tweed hsc. If you call them & ask for the price of the black one they'll give you the tweed case for black case price. Usually the tweed is $80 & black around $50.

I've been lurking and I really like what everyone has been doing to their Squiers! Yes, the sometimes unappreciated Squier can often be mighty and I love all the Squiers in my woodpile. I'm no bass snob and they get equal playtime with my "Official" Fenders. I love them all!
