Mods:
250k CTS pots
Sprague Orange Drop Cap .047uf
Switchcraft output jack
Fully copper shielded
Vintage Cloth insulated wire
Black Pearl pickguard
70's-style strat knobs
Rolled fretboard edges
8-32 Steel threaded inserts in neck
1 1/2" machine screw neck screws
Dunlop strap locks

Amazing playing & sounding bass for little cash. I've got another (discontinued Metallic Red) - still a work in progress, and been dying for a BrownBurst model. All will get the same basic treatments.

Yeah, black and natural are my only colors.

BTW, your 'stang bass trim on page one is a thing of beauty. :) Squires are great for crazy mods.

the one of the main page doesnt even look like that any more. its flat black with hand painted pin stripes. hot rod bass i guess. my neighbor is a custom professional painter.

great...now ill have to post pics.

ps- ill update numbers too, when im not at work.

Stingray, that's gorgeous. Looks like we have more in common than our love for SXs. Oh, and Acoustic amps.

Thanks Squashed! I can't deny - I love these Affinity models as well. After dragging one out of its case after quite some time away, I was instantly reminded why I had accumulated 3 of them. Too much outta sight - outta mind. Still love my SX's too, but these will be seeing a lot of gig time again as well.

wanted to add a few more of a Deluxe Active I tricked. I changed out the entire bass except for the neck and body. Everything went, all hardware, all electronics. Put in an Aguilar OBP-1, DiMarzio UltraJazz's, Sadowsky Pots n Knobs. and GOLD EVERYWHERE. Tricked to the max.

Awesome ... Simply awesome.
Did you change out the tuners? The Affinity Jazz V I picked up at GC had the El Cheapo tuners. Completely turned me off to it.
At the price point for it, I may still pick it up if the tuners can at least be replaced as my 1st step to "Trick it out".

A pic of the headstock would be appreciated :)

Thanks!

You know, I have never had a bit of problem with these tuning gears. They turn super smoothly & always stay in tune - save for typical reasons (seasonal temp changes, new strings, etc). I've had MUCH worse on instruments I've owned in the past. I've had 2-3 of these Affinities for a while now...when I had the necks off them the other night to add the stainless steel inserts, I noticed the date stamps were from 2007. So maybe they've changed to a different supplier for tuning gears in recent years? Not sure... The only other thought is that they turn so smoothly (and with little effort) that going in or out of a case or gig bag could put them out of tune. But again in all honesty - I've got no complaints & no issue with the tuners. I do not find myself excessively tuning it. The necks are very thin (think Geddy jazz thin) and in general, new bass necks fresh from the factory tend to be a lot more susceptible to mild temperature changes in the first few months of ownership but will usually settle in to less overall adjustment once the wood is "trained" to a general truss rod tension for a period of time. All I can say is that they've done their job very well for me, IME with them. I'll try to get pics on the headstock later. BTW, I could not resist ordering a BrownBurst model earlier today. I guess I will have the chance to try a current-year model when it arrives to see if the tuners have changed or give me any issue.

I plan on ordering one next week! Can't wait...the brown burst looks amazing. :hyper:

Where did you buy your pick guard for the last tricked-out squire? Did you have to have one custom made? My brown burst wants a tort guard. ;)

1985 Squier......'88 Warmoth birdseye/ebony neck, CTS guts and Fender '62 pups.

That looks great! I need a pick guard like that for my Atkinson Precision. It's Olympic White and tort but the current guard isn't quite dark enough; it's more of a red than a brown. Is that the Fender '62 Precision guard or something that just came on the bass?

I just sold the body to my "tricked out" Squier but here is a picture, regardless.

The neck is missing in this picture but it was nothing special. It did have black tuning machines and a black string tree, though.

The only modifications that I made were the pick guard, the knobs, the bridge, the tuning machines/string tree, and I replaced the pickup with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound. The wiring harness was going out so I decided to part it out. If it were a more comfortable bass, I probably would have redone the wiring and kept it around. It was fun messing around and "making it my own" (if you can call it that; I made the same changes that almost everyone else makes). At least I was able to get the mod bug out of my system. Now I'm buying basses that are awesome right out of the box (Squier CV 60s Jazz ;)).

Cool - congrats in advance! The pickguard is actually one I had laying around the house. It was originally bought for an MIA Fender Jazz 5 I had, but it "fits". By that I mean that it does have a truss-rod access hole at the neck, but the Affinities have a truss rod that adjusts at the headstock - meh, I don't mind it. The best fit for an Affinity jazz is a Mexican Jazz pickguard - doesn't have that unnecessary truss rod access at the neck heel. However, neither the MIA or MIM pg will line up absolutely perfectly with all the existing pickguard screw holes, but if you take your time with a screwdriver, the screws will work themselves into the existing holes - no need to drill totally fresh holes.

Also, both MIA and MIM pg's will leave a small gap about 1/8" inch at the end of the fretboard - neither butt up completely flush against the end of the neck. But the gap is hard to see, as it's in a normal "shadow area" where the body meets the neck - you'd have to be in bright light to notice it. To my knowledge, there are no perfect fit Squier Affinity pg's available as an aftermarket option. Perfect in every way would require sending a stock pg out to a place like Pickguardian or similar place that will cut you a copy using the stock guard as a template.

I ordered it from Bass Parts Resource. It is just the Squier tort guard and not the '62 specifically. Same holes, just $35 bucks cheaper. That being said, I have also never seen them this dark. I got two at the same time and they were both like this.....so maybe it was just a run of that stock.
