I love the RW fence too.

:)

Thanks - took a lot of work to age it convincingly.

The whole idea of a double-bucker bass (like with P-pups and such) has intrigued me, but that just bumps it up to a completely new level. What is the sound that comes out of THAT sexy beast?

Big fat "thumpy thump".

Here's a really quick MP3 sound clip.

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Neck pickup only (stock sound) ---->bridge pickup only ----->both pickups full on

No compression, no EQ - everything dead flat.

Once I fire up the big amp I'll check the pickup heights to make sure they're where they sound best, but the above MP3 clip should at least give you an idea of what the bass sounds like.

To tell you the truth I couldn't tell much of a difference between the neck and bridge pup but together it not only sounded different but better (IMO)

:)

I can definitely hear a big difference in each position on the mp3, but I would say that the monitors I listen on are a good bit better quality than the typical computer speaker setup. I use Event Studio monitors, and it definitely helps render a clearer representation of the sound. I would guess that on the normal Altec (or whatever) computer speakers the pickups wouldn't have a ton of difference in the sound.

I'm digging the bass so far - tomorrow gig should be fun.

:)

hope these attached..

How do those pickups sound in a maple necked jazz? always been curious

Howdy!
I threatened on another thread do do this, so here it is. I have been spending my time these days (and will continue to do so) on the DB side, but I have been a EB player for almost 20 years. I gotta say, this Squier VM is as good as my trusty LB76F (at least). Scary.
Obviously, PU covers. I am a dedicated fretless player, and I spent a few years with the 6, so I decided that the wide P option from Warmoth wasn't going to cause me any problems. Good call on my part, even if it cost 2/3rds of the original purchase price of the bass. Well worth it.
WOW, this bass is really good. A surprising amount of mwah with Chrome flats, but very controlled. I have always felt that the best complement someone playing fretless (post Jaco) can get is "Wow! I didn't even notice that was a fretless!" Good to have the mwah when you want it I guess.
The pics show a full cover type thing. I have decided that I like the Gotah 201 enough to forgo the bridge cover.
Mmmmm; almost (but not quite) enough for me to set my DB down for 3 days or so.
Amazing stuff from Squier these days! Anyone: Is there a Squier lefty P? (no, not P "special").
Thanks,
Brian
p.s. what an amazing hunk of soft maple for a body!! The back 1/3 rd is even better somehow.

New warmoth fretless neck, new GOTOH tuners and bridge, and a painted pickguard. Some new knobs, brass screws, and gold hardware where ever I could get it. All thats left to do is new electronics and It'll be done.

This was a relatively simply swap... we put a P-bass neck on a stock 50s Vibe - had to cut a new pickguard (to allow for the rounded heel of the P-bass neck) and dowel the old/drill new holes in the back of the neck (to line up with the holes in the body). No routing of the body was necessary - the base of the heel sat nicely in the pocket and the scale length was unchanged.

Having played standard P-basses forever, the "baseball bat" neck of the 50s Vibe felt strange, so the P-bass neck was a perfect solution... I love the sustain of this bass - don't know if that is due to the heft of the bridge, but I don't care because it sounds great... I had considered changing the pickup, but the tech checked with a buddy at Fender who recommended keeping the stock pickup - said that it was virtually identical to a quarter pounder... the pots feel way more substantial than my MIM P-bass... had originally planned to use this as my back-up, but it is now my "first in line".

One thing: the pickups are a little "buzzy" - are there quiter pickups available, or is it simply the "single pole" thing happening?

What did you do with the original neck I want a tele bass neck and would be intrested in it

sounds like sex

;)

The delanos are a really high ouput, hi fi sounding pickups. They cost an arm and a leg as well. With a maple neck, I usually EQ it so I can get a punchy growly tone. The thing with the delanos is they don't sound like a jazz bass, with is great if you're looking for versatility. Right now they're in a passive bass, I plan on getting a preamp eventually for it. I tried selling the pickups away about a month ago but I couldnt get my asking price so I held on to them.

ah ok, I'm curious as I've seen them and heard they sound nice and aggressive but others have said they have a distinct mid scoop which to me isn't the right type of aggression, I need tons of growly mids to cut through none of this scooped smiley face EQ just doesn't work for a full sounding band.

Since my last post (#122) I've made some changes. The bound & blocked neck isn't working out right now -- needs a complete fret job. I'm back to the original neck. I've forgotten how well this neck plays!

Anyway, here is the latest rendition of my entry in the Tricked Out Squier Club, proudly displaying the Squier logo once again:

I had to put the tort guard back on because it looks SO good with the rosewood board. And I also put Chromes back on -- I hate those colored ball ends, but the sound is incredible. In any case, it's staying like this for a while. Partly because I don't have the money to get the other neck worked on, but mostly because this is more me -- I can't fight it, I'm a classic look kinda guy.
