Tricked Out Squier Club

i just put a white guard on my vm jazz. it was a fender mia standard. it fit everything except one hole and the control plate. luckily i had a fender control plate in my parts box, so i swapped it out.

ive debating refinishing the neck in a tinted nitro, for looks and feel. but right not im happy with the way it is. if i do get the refinishing bug, ill probably paint the body too.

so far i really like the 77 vm jazz. at first the feel, the sound were great. the pickups sound good as is, the neck is comfy and the block inlays eally pop with the white guard i added.

a few complaints. the tuners are really stiff, and cant be loosed much more. i might fiddle with them and see if i can solve that problem. but they do stay in tune. thinking about swapping out with some hipshots and an xtender. the binding along the neck is a bit uneven, thick near the headstock and thin near the body. looks like they used the binding (not the side of the neck) as a reference for the side dot markers. so it looks a little goofy. it doesnt affect the way it plays, so it doesnt bother me much. as a whole the bass looks, feels, and sounds good. i love rotosounds now. they may be my new string preference from now on.

ok, and the reveal. i plan on wiring it like a rickenbacker. im going to add a mono/stereo switch instead of two jacks though. stacked pots, toggle for pickup selection, and toggle for mono/stereo. with the dimarzio pickups....going to be awesome.

mono/stereo.
is it useless unless im running two amps/cabs?
the reason i ask, is that i played a ric at a music store and played the same amp twice, once in mono and once in ric-o-sound (stereo) and i did notice a difference.

maybe the mono/stereo is not what i want to do...
maybe i am over thinking this.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to permanently color in the fretlines on the fretless VMJ? I tried a magic marker mainly to see how I would do without the lines and, of course, it rubbed off.

I'll throw my CV 50's in...

Had to steal this pic from the guitar shop. I dropped my CV 50s bass off a few weeks ago to get some work done. Will go pick her up this weekend and post better pics. But wanted to share...

* String through body 2-saddle bridge and body ferrules installed
* Fender '51 RI Tuners installed
* Upgraded wiring/pots/jack/knobs
* Headstock stripped and retinted with 50s Fender logo installed
* Chrome Bridge/Pickup covers installed
* Tortoise pickguard (might switch back to the black)
* Setup with Fender Flatwound strings

Can't wait to get her back!

NICE BASS! Aye chihuahua!

Thanks handofseven! It was quiet fiddly, because the Allparts neck didn´t fit the pocket of the Squier. I had to do some woodwork I haven´t done before. Turned out good though and it´s my favorite bass for slapping. I really dig the Fender Noiseless PUs for thumb style playing. Next project might be a birdseye neck/ buckeye top body Jazz, since I have a nice plank of buckeye in the workshop. Not for this thread sadly: no Squier parts involved.

How much did that Allparts neck set you back?

yeah i noticed that as well, if only squier made their basses with the tinted necks AND matte finish. i would be all over that.

Sat down with some MIM Jazzes yesterday at the music store. The necks were all pale maple, white as snow. My VM is actually darker. Now I'm sure it's just the contrast with the Squier natural finish on the body that makes them look sooo white.

AND none of the Fender necks felt as nice. The frets were finished better I admit. The setup was non existant, all the saddle screws were wound flush with the top. Dillweeds!

Conclusion? $300.00 bass with $100 dollar black Hipshots and $20 black wilkinson bridge (just for appearance) slays MIM Fender. :cool:

BTW the CV 50's butterscotch looks tinted Invalid Link Removed GAS
