So how's about we discuss your feelings on the bass before your mods. I don't plan on mods when I get mine... well I'll get some correct knobs! How did you miss those hmmmm Steve?

I had to change the knobs cause the stock pots/knobs are the push on ones. When I upgraded pots, had to get the knobs with the set screw. So I went with the tele dome knobs.
I really didn't play the bass enough stock. But I really think it was fine, but it went to the shop for mods. The pots/wiring etc. wasn't a expensive upgrade. I think he charged me $15 for that and I ordered the pots/wiring/jack/knobs from basspartsresource.
I hated the stock high mass bridge. To me, it just didn't look right, so I ordered a string through 2 saddle bridge and body ferrules and had the luthier install it. The bridge cover was a little tight and not a good fit over the stock bridge.
In all honesty, you wont be dissapointed with the bass stock. It's awesome. The mods I did was not really needed. I just had some spare cash and figured why not?

1. used Genuine Fender vintage knobs
2. hand-sanded "satin finished" pickguard (looks better with shiny PU covers and thumbrest)
3. used Vintage Noiseless PUP's (you can see rusty polepieces)
Mods to be done:
1. Clothed wiring
2. cavity shielding
3. original vintage electrics
4. maybe new body paint, still not sure what color to choose: Lake Placid Blue (pearl pickguard), flat black (Tort p/g) or 2 Tone Sunburst (with 3-ply black pickguard)
I may go with this mod: black/grey paisley p/g

Just a quickie here: what percentage of the Squier must be Squier to comply with the admission and posting of a Modded Squier here?

Here's my brand-spankin'-new Squier CV Jazz Bass with a WD 3-ply Mint Green/Black/Mint Green pickguard, Fender Original Jazz Bass pickups, Rotosound RS 77 Flatwound strings and it's wired for either mono or stereo out. No tone pot.
I guess AFTER installation. New bass is a MOD to screws, so we wanna see this mod. Hahahah
Artwork done by a friend in Miami in 1992. A-type neck got from an on-line private purchase, old Duncan p'up, don't even know what the body is- but it sounds gorgeous, esp with the TI Jazz-Flats on it. Lovely player, great finger-funk and reggae bass..

My 77 jazz you see about was not worth a dam when I got it new.When looking down the fret board it was like waves in a ocean, frets up and down everywhere(Buzzed all over the place with intonation issues). The nut was not cut worth a dam either. Brought it to my guy and he fixed it all and set it to Fender specs. Still sucked that I had to pay 80 bucks to get it setup how it should have arrived. Oh well, lesson learned.
Why do you think a 300 dollar bass should arrive set up like a 3000 dollar Lakland? Last week I was trying some new mim Fenders and the strings were half an inch above the fretboard! IF you buy from a seller with a good tech, you MAY get lucky with a well set up bass. Otherwise, you have to accept them as is. Why would you buy the bass without checking the frets first? If you were unhappy with the frets, that is a defect in workmanship and Fender would likely stand behind it and set you right after an authorized repair center evaluated it.
I agree with your synopsis. In fact even a uber high quality bass won't necessarily be set up well after shipping across the country. For less expensive basses, when you buy from Guitar Center or Sam Ash (for instance), they generally don't spend time setting up the basses that they sell.
I do my research and decide if I am comfortable with what I see in the store (neck straight, fit and finish OK, etc.) and then purchase it and take it home and start tweaking the set up myself. I have set up all of my basses and the results are outstanding. If you can get comfortable working on them then you can really dial them in.
If not, you put that very important task in someone else's hands and pay some good money for it. I was never happy with a bass someone else set up, so I taught myself how to do the work.
