Tricked Out Squier Club

Someone said that modding can be addictive, and I agree, because I could never sell this bass for what I've got in it, and I'm a bargin shopper, so I may not be done. I have mentioned in a few posts that I'd match my AFN P up against VM's, CV's, and even MIM's. Here's the specs to my tricked out beauty:

1. 2003 CII Squier Affinity Precision bass
2. Lindy Fralin pup
3. Custom nut crafted from dear antler
4. 60’s RI electronics
5. Precision Ashtray Bridge Cover
6. Aluminum tape shielding
7. 50’s Fender Precision decal sealed with satin acrylic
8. Limited Edition Custom Series Neck plate with serial
9. Switchcraft output jack
10. la Bella Deep Talkin' Flats 760FL
11. Squier Affinity Tuning Machines
12. Metallic blue body
13. Dome Precision knobs
14. 3-ply Parchment Pickguard
15. Professionally setup
16. Squier Bridge

Nice custom precision. My favorite part is the antler nut!

Why do you think a 300 dollar bass should arrive set up like a 3000 dollar Lakland? Last week I was trying some new mim Fenders and the strings were half an inch above the fretboard! IF you buy from a seller with a good tech, you MAY get lucky with a well set up bass. Otherwise, you have to accept them as is. Why would you buy the bass without checking the frets first? If you were unhappy with the frets, that is a defect in workmanship and Fender would likely stand behind it and set you right after an authorized repair center evaluated it.
Im pretty hands on when it comes to neck relief, action , and intonation, but this thing was a mess. I took it too the music shop and one of the local know it alls said, just let me try before you deside you need a frett job. Within 20 minute he was like, im sorry but this things got something weird going on. I was'nt complaining that I had to pay to get it fixed, infact, thats the reason why I did not send it back, because I was gona get it all dressed anyway. My guy is as good as a Plek machine, if not better. I just was saying what my experience was like. Im sorry if I affended anyone by bashing Squier, I was just telling the truth.:) Anyway, I like it now and thats all that matters.

Gotta step down from this club. I moved my Squier PJ along to a nice gigging musician. He was really happy with the way the Dimarzio Model P+J sounded.

Was gonna keep it as a backup, but since I am not gigging at the moment, I can't really justify owning 3 basses.

Here it is again. Dimarzio Model P+J, Jazz knobs, Vintage threaded saddles.

Here is my Squier VM P bass with a Fender
licensed jazz neck,

This bass has the VM neck with a 2000 MIM
P bass body and Duncan SP3 pickups.

It is strung with ROTO RS77LD Flats,

They both look great! How do they compare? Any particular reason why the Jazz RW neck went on the VM instead of the MIM?

I prefer the look of the Blue + Maple, if it were me, I'd add a BWB pickguard, they look great with dark coloured basses.

Arsie - I was kickin round the idea of installing a Dimarzio J in the bridge position of my Squier Jaguar short scale PJ. How did you like the Jazz pickup on yours and how does it compare to the sound of a stock fender jazz bridge pickup? The Jag jazz pickup is a very low output pickup so it's easlily overpowered by the precision pickup (which soloed sounds great). Also, are the pole pieces adjustable on the jazz pickup?

Hay Arsey,

I wanted the MIM to be vintage sounding.
I got SP3 Quarter pounder. It didn't sound
as vintage as the VM P bass. I could not
put flats on the Jazz neck because of the
high tension.

Rather than changing the electronics, I just
traded necks.

Now, the SP3's high end output enhances
the vintage sound of the ROTO flats. It sounds
awesome.

Getting the high tension flats on the VM neck
and VM pickup was the motivating factor.

The VM pup already sounded vintage and all it
needed was a nice jazz neck.

Secondary, the natural body just looks better
with a rosewood neck and the MIM looks killer
with the maple neck.

Compare for your self,

It just seemed to be the right thing to do,

:hmm: I am not worthy to be inducted [or hazed] into the Club as yet, but have such aspirations.
I have a VMJ bass, and a CVJ... and I need help from the highly enlightened ones among you. I want to transform the CVJ into a 5-1 Bass... tuned to B.
:help: I want to transform the VMJ into a D-bass.... I need both to have big bottom booty, but retain the somewhat edgy ability of the VMJ.
I assume I'm going to deal with nut and bridge on the CVJ, but not as sure about the VMJ.
Once the 'tonal' mods are done we'll deal with the cosmetic fun :).... :)

My first advise is to raise your J pickup half as close to the string as your P and see if you like the balance.

The Dimarzio J pickup is A LOT better than the anemic J that Squier puts in the PJ. I am not sure if all the Dimarzio J pickup models are humcanceling, as I got mine as a specific Model P+J set (DP126). I would say that the difference between the two Ps are minor, but the two Js are very different.

Thing is, with my J pickups half as close to the strings as my P, and the added bonus of individual string pole adjustment, all strings and both pickups sound perfectly balanced in volume. I would definitely recommend it as an upgrade to Squier PJs. :hyper:

Perfect! Just what I needed to know, thanks for the quick response. I did the jazz pu raise and the p pu lower and the jazz was still completely drowned out by the precision. I'll give the Dimarzo Jazz with the adjustable poles a try, the price looks like a real deal, kinda hard to go wrong.

Does anyone know if I can put the standard jazz bass knobs on the squier 77VM jazz?

this reminds me of a similar question: does anyone know a source for a knob like the stock Tone Knob used on the Classic Vibe Jazz bass? I'd like to put three of those on my VMJ

Like this?

Yes - get them from Gearhead at GC as they are gonna fit even if they are for split or solid shafts. I put the type for solid shafts on split shafts all the time and no problems.

Could you post more pics of this beautiful bass? I want to make the same mods (Chrome covers, tugbar, new headstock decal) on a new VMJ I'm about to purchase... I'd really appreciate that.

It all started like this:::

Then I put the Tort 13-hole ('64-7?) PG on it:::

I added a Dutchman under the PG to attach the p'up cover screw, although some have just
threaded the screws into the PG and called it OK.

The rest of the hardware was pretty much easy - although I put a push-pull 250Ω switch on
the smaller Tone knob - again with the Allen-setscrew type knob and it's staying put just fine.
