Tronographic Rusty Box Soundclips

you know what? i think i'ma sign up for this Rusty Box! i was just about to spring for a Sansamp PDDI...maybe i still will and use both with my GK1001RBII...or is that maybe too much? i already have a Musket fuzz as well...to add some of that grit growl grind and warmth to an already awesome amp in the 1001RBII...

I've used a Rusty Box extensively for the last couple of years. I got a VT Bass last winter and tried it out for a few shows, but could never get a sound that I like as much at the RB, or my V4-B.

I use it through my GK400RB's effects return, basically using the GK as a power amp. Sounds great, and I love having the boost. Super easy to dial in the David Sims/Bob Weston tone, but flexible to allow you to make that sound your own.

If anyone wants any examples, I can direct you to a couple of songs from my band's most recent LP.

I have honestly never tried this option and have mine running in my effects chain. I have recently been searching around for other options tonally (not selling the RB) and I just ran mine through my effects loop on my LMIII. Pretty Sic!! Man am I lazy.

Should I consider/is it possible, to get a cable that is XLR > 1/4" and run the RB through the Front Balanced Input on my LMIII?

you could, but i use my unbalanced out into my power amp and the balanced (through a 1/4 -> XLR cable) as a DI for FOH.

gives me my onstage amp plus a post efx/eq DI. good times.

My LM has a DI with a pre/post select; Any +/- as to which way is better (front door/back door action)?
I mostly use just my rig, but also have the pleasure of a Soundman on enough occasions that I want to gets it right.
That said I run a bunch of other effects and when I use the DI on the LM, I want to make sure I am (or they are) Getting ALL of me.

Bass> RB> Fun Stuff

The LM's effects loop is run in series, so plugging the RB into the return won't bypass the preamp section. I don't think it would work at all, but can't say for certain.

Just as a note: An effects loop that's run parallel (ie most) would not likely be able to use the onboard DI when plugging the RB direct to the effects return/power amp. Most DI's occur at the preamp, which is negated when going into the return.

Well right now I have it running in>out the effects loop and there is a HUGE difference on the sound from in-line to where it is now. I mean, playing this thing now is the Shizzle!
It was nice placed in various local's of my pedal chain, but this Idea from tallchris about the effects return has really giving me a whole other highly pleasant thing coming from my Speakers.

So as is, running in my effects loop, the DI to the board will not contain the mighty RB Love?

Hard to say. The LM stuff is pretty strange in that they've run the effects loop in series with the preamp section, which negates a lot of the benefits of a parallel loop or power amp insert that bypasses the preamp. If you think it's working better, than definitely keep doing it that way.

The DI on the LM is still after the preamp, but since the effects loop is in series you should still get the effects loop content. I'd have to look at a block diagram to know for sure though. My point about the DI not functioning was for parallel effects loops, which are far more common than the series loop found on your LM.

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the difference with the Markbass Effects Loop is that it is taken before the EQ section of the preamp, whereas most Effects Loops are after the entire preamp and right before the power amplifier. I think the first gain stage (the "Gain" or "Input Level" or whatever MB calls it) is before the effects loop though (I could be wrong here), so it is different than just running effects directly into the front of the amp (by plugging the RB into the Effects Loop Return, you would be bypassing the first gain stage if I am understanding correctly, so the change in tone might be that you are getting less harsh clipping of the LM preamp?). The only benefit I could see to this kind of loop design is that you would have better control of levels into the effects in the loop than with most effects loops, as changes in EQ won't screw with the signal the effects are seeing.

Apart from that difference, I believe the Effects Loop is indeed series with the Markbass amps, but it is also series with most bass amps made in recent years (the difference in the Markbass just being where in the circuit the series loop occurs). A parallel effects loop would be one where the signal from the front of the amp to the power amp was not ever bypassed whether or not something is plugged into the effects loop- most amps with a parallel loop have some sort of "effects blend" control that balances how much of the signal from the preamp is sent through the effects loop vs how much is just routed directly to the preamp (two seperate signal paths being blended together, hence the "parallel"- though turning the blend all the way up would be basically equivalent to a series loop). My Mesa Boogie D-180 and 400+ had parallel loops, but I can't really recall any others that I personally have used that had them (I think maybe some SWR amps used them too?). I would sometimes try to blend a fuzz in with the FX loop when using my Mesas, but never had very good luck with it- part of the reason being that the very hot level of the preamp didn't really jive very well with most fuzzes...

Unrelated note- One cool aspect of some newer amps like Genz-Benz is that you can take an output from the Effects send without breaking the connection to the power amp, so you can drive two power amps with the same preamp.

O' Great Sages of the RB please forgive me for my uncertainty, but I read some Joyous Words in yr Scriptures.

What exactly would I plug into the Balanced XLR Input on the front of my head?

As I look to my right at my setup I think I just answered my own (half-typed) question. This just another version of my 1/4" Cable input, no? The more I dig on this tone with my effects running before my input and the RB through the Send/Return Effects Loop, I start to wonder about going the Power Amp/RB Pre-Amp route.

And power is power, to a point, yes? Would I be downgrading if I went with a Carvin Power Amp to save on $$$ and run my RB?

Suggestions, thoughts, Concerns?

"r... look, man, I've got certain information, all right? Certain things have come to light. And, you know, has it ever occurred to you, that, instead of, uh, you know, running around, uh, uh, blaming me, you know, given the nature of all this new sh*t, you know, I-I-I-I... this could be a-a-a-a lot more, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, complex, I mean, it's not just, it might not be just such a simple... uh, you know? "

i feel like such a pariah amongst my friends sometimes.

hated the LotR movies, only got a chuckle or two out of Big Lebowski (Tlea as a nihilist is golden), and want to punch them on the throat if i say 42 and they talk about "That movie was AWESOME!".... and they don't mean the BBC version.

Nice Lebowski reference at the end.

Carvin makes good power amps, so I wouldn't consider it a downgrade at all.

You would potentially need to buy an external DI since you would lose that going from an LM to a pre/power setup. That might negate any cost savings going that route.

As Behndy mentioned, the Rusty Box will work as a DI simultaneously when working as a preamp by using a balanced cable from the Main output!

I actually bought a GB Streamliner both to see what the hype was all about, and potentially to use as a small/very lightweight power amp. The jury's still out on whether I think the Streamliner preamp is worth the extra money, but the Rusty Box through the power amp sounds fantastic! You might as well just stick with the Markbass/effects loop if it sounds good to you and puts out the power you need...

Agreed on all counts.

You could certainly use a 1/4" to XLR adapter off the main output to get it into a board on a live gig, or just go straight into the 1/4" input on the board if you were running sound yourself.

The power amp section of the LM stuff works just fine as long as it's meeting your power needs, and you're not running into the horrible limiter that Markbass put in there.

lulz.

WAT.
