Turning volume off before shutting off amp?

both valid concerns with old stuff, but most amps you find these days don't have those issues.

if you don't hear thumps, etc, they're not happening, and you can stop worrying about it (as long as you still remember the amp as "last on, first off" in any signal chain).

Yeah- last on/first off is a great way to avoid launching woofers across the room- some preamps send an amazingly loud pop or thump. I seem to remember Crown preamps doing that. I have also seen some cones take almost a second to stop moving and they didn't move fast.
