Turning volume off before shutting off amp?

Turning all volumes on the amp down is just a habit with me. I do it because if I'm mindlessly setting up my stuff, I don't want to have to worry that I'm ham-handedly scratching a hot instrument cable around on the input jack of my bass--for everyone to hear in a six mile radius.

My amp has soft on and soft off, so I have gotten out of the habit. But if turn off the preamp BEFORE turning off the amp, then I would get an annoying THUMP and a pissed off look from the sound guy!

both valid concerns with old stuff, but most amps you find these days don't have those issues.

if you don't hear thumps, etc, they're not happening, and you can stop worrying about it (as long as you still remember the amp as "last on, first off" in any signal chain).

Yeah- last on/first off is a great way to avoid launching woofers across the room- some preamps send an amazingly loud pop or thump. I seem to remember Crown preamps doing that. I have also seen some cones take almost a second to stop moving and they didn't move fast.

I have a whole process I go thru when turning on amp and effects and when turning off amp and effects my tube pedals cause that pop and I hate it.

I never really thought about it, but my Carvin B2000 has a mute switch I always use before I turn it off. It does help conceal unwanted fumbling noises when first setting everything up.

Huge pet peeve of mine. It's amazing how many people I see don't do that. I always turn the volume down, and I'm even in the habit of turning my volume on the bass down.

It's just like people who turn their car off with the stereo on 11. Next time you get in and turn the key... I myself always turn the stereo down before shutting the engine off.

I personally enjoy the blast of sound in the car when turning it on.

Call it habit, I always turn down the master volume and engage the mute button before turning off power.

When setting up, I make sure the gain and master are at zero before turning on.

You mentioned that you don't have a bass yet. Was any instrument plugged in when you did your power off test ?

Yep i still have my strat from when i used to play, I tried jamming with the bottom 4 strings the same way I would with a bass. It wasn't the same, as you might imagine. Lol
